Subject: Making 3DS (and Bryce?) models "posable."

nevin ( ) posted Thu, 19 July 2001 at 1:54 AM ยท edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 12:15 PM

Just picked up an old version of 3DSmax, so what I NEED is a nice set of tutorials that show me how to "poser-ize" 3DS models. I'm mostly interested in making my own characters and/or clothing. Also, is it possible to do the same with "models" created in Bryce3D (like make a door swing with Poser dials, for example)? Any suggestions are much appreciated! Running Poser4 and will be getting the ProPack in a few days.

Poser uses only .obj-type files for poseables. There are a couple of ways to go here though. You can import the 3DS file into Poser then export it back out as a .obj. You can also check the Habware site to see if there is a .obj export/import plug-in for your version of Max.

Changing the format of the model is not really my issue. I'm just not sure how to add joints and pivot points to models. =)

That is a toughy, when I started learning how to pose models, I searched everywhere to learn, hard to find all the information in one spot, it is not as hard as everyone makes, but you need to do the right sequence, I know how to do it now, but if you send me your email I will send you the details, and try to do it step by step...I will be making a tutorial on our site just for this very subject. And it will be specific, but it will surely be to long to post to a forum. Sharen

Hi, I too am trying to covert 3ds files to pz3. I just ordered pro pack and am told it makes it easy! I will let you know. If you get any good stuff, forward it to me please. I am trying to make 3ds figures fully posable in poser as pz3 files.

This started out to be as a .dwg, solid model, then went to .3ds, then went to a .obj, which is where we transfered it into an poseable object. All the tires spin, the doors open and close and the dump bed goes up and down. We will tell you how we did it sytematically, once you do it, you will never forget, but like I said, you can't post it in a forum it will take up to much space. But it is not as hard as you think. Bryce doesn't have an export function yet for anything except terrains. I was hoping they would in 5. Now maybe 6.

@atthisstage Bryce 4 DOES have an export function for imported meshs. Example - import a mesh - select the mesh, - click on the edit button (smooth) and then - click ctrl-D - save the mesh in the format you like. :-) Robert
