Subject: Anyone using Poser 8 Hair Room with good results?

Whichway ( ) posted Wed, 16 September 2009 at 8:07 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 5:49 AM

I've just started to play around with the Poser Hair Room - I happen to have Poser 8 - and there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of discussion about it. I've found the old Paula Sanders Reports for Poser 5 & 6. Is it just too hard to use or does it not give good results? I don't want to waste a lot of time on it if I won't be able to get any good results.

I've seen a few good results with it, but they're few and far between.

Generally, unless you're doing animations, it's a waste of time.

And even with animations.. the results are iffy.

THIS took me I dunno how long, and the hair is still far too floppy, no matter which settings I used...

It's a bug, not a feature. 😉

I use it for mermaid hair, it's more useful than using hair props for underwater floating or anti-gravity environments.

 TrekkieGrrrl,
Did you have a wind generator in that scene? Seems like the hair is waving and blowing even when he is just sitting. Could be from some of the dynamics settings, but looks like an external force.

I haven't spent a lot of time in the hair room for awhile, but got some decent results for stills. a couple things you need to keep in mind. The individual hairs keep the same thickness and thus say you have 2,000 strands on scalp. when your camera is far away it may look perfect, but then you decide to do a close-up and now the hair is sparse. I had to add more strands, but even then it wasn't looking right.  I will have to look around for some renders, but I think the mistake the many people make is that grow all the hair at once and try to style it. You need to grow it in groups , like 2 for bangs, 2 for right side and 2 for left side and 2 for top and 2 for back. You may think why 2? it adds a lot of work. but you need to have 2 to add more realism. The 2nd  set of hair in a group should be slightly shorter and offset or I like to take the style tool and just twist it a slight bit., then I slightly change the color of the 2nd set as well, just ever so slightly.
This is not something you can whip out in a few minutes , it will takes hours so be prepared, but the results will be much better. Take notes of your settings as well as you work. So you can flip the numbers for the right and lefts sides or slightly vary the length quickly without going back and forth too much.

GreybroI just completely ignore the hair room altogether as I've never gotten great results from it. I do love Poser 8 in general though. The little image to the left was done with the P7 hair room after much. much trial and error.

TrekkieGrrrl,

That is still pretty cool results. Bet that one took a while to render.
