Subject: how to tell # of verts, edges selected?

anyone know?  i'm new to blender running through tuts.
don't see anything to tell me how many verts selected, which i need to know for mirroring and rejoining verts.  same with edges, need to know if merging verts eliminates edges of just overlaps em.

Top right corner of the menu bar.  Shows selected out of total verts, edges and faces.
