Blender F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 03 9:26 pm)
The Blender vertex groups are not exported unless you use the polygroups button in the export dialog. I just discovered this as I tested it for this post - cool.
Another option - you can use material indexes instead, then use the export option button called "Material Groups". It's been a while since I did it but when I built clothing pieces for Poser figures I actually ended up splitting the piece into multiple objects before exporting which was a pain but it worked.
Haven't figured it out yet. Somehow missing something. I have a bit the same, I am thinking of cutting my mesh up. But trying to avoid that. I have one mesh for export to Daz. I cannot attach skeleton, if I don't have groups. The plan was using Blender only for creating the groups, but it surprised me. In the future I will start using Blender. Getting late here, so give it a new try tomorrow.

See linked thread. There were supposed to be changes to 2.49 that added a "poly groups" options to the OBJ exporter (and importer as well I think) to handle this.

Very new at Blender. If I create groups and save it as obj, the groups are gone when I reopen the obj file in Blender. I tried several import and export settings, including the group button. What part am I missing?
