Subject: The truth about RDNA

Klebnor ( ) posted Fri, 02 October 2009 at 6:29 PM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 11:21 PM

After all the discussion here, I was really intrigued by this "RDNA".

Well, I googled RDNA, and found the website.

www.geocities.com/mikerdna/

Amazing stuff, they're into wicca and pagan students.

The best link was to the Druidic Karaoke homepage.  I especially liked "Minnesota Druids", sung to the tune of the Beach Boys' "California Girls".

Very informative, thanks for turning me on to this ... I'm not sure what it has to do with Poser.

Are you saying that there are TWO RDNA's??

bagginsbill ( ) posted Fri, 02 October 2009 at 7:17 PM

Actually three.

If you Google RDNA, the first listing is Runtime DNA (Poser stuff), the second is "Reformed Druids of North America" and the third is "Recombinant Deoxyribonucleic Acid."

RuntimeDNA, the website, is at http://www.runtimedna.com

RDNA is an acronym for two other completely different things:

Recombinant DNA and The Reformed Druids of America.  However, when I search for RDNA in google, RuntimeDNA comes up.

Not to be pedantic (well, maybe), but it's Reform Judaism, not "ReformED." "Reformed" is a subtradition of Christianity, one of the major branches of the Protestant Reformation alongside Lutheranism.

A F.A.Q. about Reformed Druidism

My favorite part:

Q: Why do you call yourself "Reformed"?
A: Good question. Um...Because we also worship bushes?

RDNA is an acronym for two other completely different things

Well, it's not actually an acronym at all. Unless you can find a way to pronounce it as a word.

For examples: BASIC (the computer language) is an acronym, so is LASER.

To Lundqvist:

People who put a V immediately after a Q probably shouldn't call pronunciations into question.

As a matter of fact, it is quite simple to pronounce RDNA as a word:

"Everything I know about acronyms, I rdna book."

Validity has nothing to do with pronunciation.

Hoplaa may well be a valid name.  Gkcqpxzt is a valid name, please do pronounce it.

hoplaa ( ) posted Tue, 06 October 2009 at 3:31 PM

Validity has much to do with the discussion when you imply that the person has chosen his name and should therefore refrain from calling pronunciation into question. It may well be his real name, in which case suggesting what you did makes no sense whatsoever.

Lundqvist/Lundquist is a perfectly normal Swedish (and to a degree Danish) family name.

I'd like to know where Gkcqpxzt is a common name. Just because it exists in an internet "list of unpronouncable names" I would'nt give that much credit. Anyone can make a list like that and pretend it's real. With no source or other explanations presented, it's just that - a list of someone hammering his fist into the keyboard and pretending it's "real" names.

My oldest kid has a very common Danish name that is apparently very hard for English speaking people to pronounce - does that mean she should never ask how things are pronounced then?

I love pedantry, but have learned to avoid it. But since we're all here pedanting (I made that up)...

There is some debate as to whether an acronym actually has to become a pronouncable word, such as laser or radar or scuba, in order to be classified as an acronym. Some say FBI, for example, is not an acronym, but an initialism.

Feh - I don't think the issue is real. The Merriam-Webster dictionary says of acronym:

a word (as NATO, radar, or laser) formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term; also : an abbreviation (as FBI) formed from initial letters : initialism

Furthermore, there is the evidence of the incredibly clever Three Letter Acronym, or TLA, of which TLA is a TLA. TLA is pronounced tee el ay. Yet most do not dispute its acronymity.

Wikipedia does dispute it. and claims that TLA is stands for Three Letter Abbreviation, and is self referential, or if it stands for Three Letter Acronym, it is not self-referential. That, of course, is a load of crap, and to be expected from an untrusted source such as Wikipedia. Everybody knows that Mrs. is an abbreviation, and it is three letters, but it is not a TLA.

Now if it was TLI, I could get behind the idea that it is a Three Letter Initialism, but that's just bogus.

Of course, TLA can also be pronounced as a word.

I thought I knew it all, TLA read this thread.

Trekkiegrrrl:  Having spent years in your neck of the woods (back when you had to take a hovercraft to get from Copenhagen to Malmo) I recognize the derivation of Lindqvist and actually have no problem pronouncing it.  Some of the folks I know in Finland, however, will forever have to put up with my mispronunciations of their completely proper names.
