omygod. Yes, not too big, but something as big as a 197Mb .obp file is going to take quite a while to bring into Bryce. I've went throght that...only with a 45Mb .obp file.

Ya know a quicker way is to just export all the files from 4, save em as a name like my objects, or whatever, then just place that exported object file right into the presets user folder, much faster that way hehe. Bryce 4 was even slow at doing that too, but now it's kinda like placing Poser files into folders.
Do atleast one thing a day that scares the hell outta ya!!
Ive imported dxf files into bryce that were in the 15meg range. Those would take easily 30 mins or more even on my old p2-400. So id assume a 45 meg file would take forever. My question is how much ram do you have. I had one scene where the bryce file was at about 212megs ram with lotsa imports. The 256megs of ram in that system would just handle it with a fresh boot. Soon as i used anything else the harddrive would being going nuts and render or doing modifications slowed to a crawl. If your importing a 197meg file not including your actually pic and os overhead and you dont have more then 256megs ram i could see a problem.
I keep all my preset library files no bigger thatn 50Mb. I have dozens of them and swap them in and out of the presets libraries in Bryce using the Bryce Librarian from wolfiesden.com. It's easy and you can swap whole preset files in & out of the User, Tutorial & other categories without leaving Bryce, by keeping the librarian open in the background. If you are still using B4 get it, it's a great program. I understand that for B5 it's not necessary, as you can have unlimited categories of user files and split them up however you like. I've posted other comments on threads over at 3Dcommune. Check the Bryce forum there & search for "Bryce Librarian" for more info about that if you are interested.
I don't think the presel library has a maximum size. I have a user preset library of objects at 700 Meg, consisting of a couple hundred objects. The presets seem to just sit there on the hard drive until they are used. I never had problems with the large preset file, except for that time when that particular drive was full. I just couldn't save any presets then. As for individual files, objects in the bryce native format load much better than .dxf or .obj files. Under Windows 98/ME, the maximum file size that I've successfully loaded is as a .dxf or .obj is 12.5 Meg; I've successfully loaded 117 Meg Models under Windows NT. (These are tree models created by Onyx tree Pro). I then save them as presets for reuse.

All of a sudden I cannot bring any object in the User preset category into Bryce. When I try, Bryce goes unresponsive while my disk busily seeks away, doing god knows what. Is is possible to have too large a "user.obp" file? Mine is 197MB. Thoughts? Comments? Peej
