A group of independent pro poser vendors have formed a group and are giving away a couple of nice Poser oriented models. There is a great morgue setting from Vanishing Point, the Meshbox Gypsy Wagon and Phil Cooke Designs made a brand new model for Halloween.

It runs out on Halloween. Check it out at http://www.poservendors.com.

I just got the download and playing with it now.

What did it say when you clicked the Zone Alarm "read more"

The site is based on a wordpress.com template, it is possible that the hosting does not match
http://www.poservendors.com/ which was registered just a few days ago via GoDaddy.com it may not have made it onto ZoneAlarms list.

If you can tell me what Zone Alarm dislikes about it I'll be happy to look into it. But as far as I know there are no pop ups, no third party banner ads, etc. It is just a pretty standard off the shelf blog site.

Actually... the thing I object to is that I have to give my full address, phone number and whatnot to register.
Sorry, but no.
Absolutely not.
No one -- and I repeat -- NO one needs my full home address, or my phone number over some unencrypted link where I have NO idea where and HOW this information is stored.

And uh... I hate to tell you... but with no privacy statement and no information as to why you ask for those details or what is being done with them... you may just be breaking the law asking for that info. (At least in Europe. You're actually required to ask permission to store this info outside the country of origin.)

** Data Protection Act 1998
**

The Act works in two ways. Firstly, it states that anyone who processes personal information must comply with eight principles, which make sure that personal information is:

  • Fairly and lawfully processed
  • Processed for limited purposes
  • Adequate, relevant and not excessive
  • Accurate and up to date
  • Not kept for longer than is necessary
  • Processed in line with your rights
  • Secure
  • Not transferred to other countries without adequate protection

I know there are "Breach of Security" laws in the US, which are a bit more convaluted than the UK Data Protection Act. But it covers personal information -- which includes name, address and phone numbers.

I'll forego the "freebies", because passing that kind of information on... might cost me more than it's worth. (Hello Identity Theft. Been there, done that. All it takes is one savvy hacker.)

The above is the bare minimum of protection. Aside from that, there is no information what is being done with the details, for what purpose they are collected, how they are stored, where they may be passed to (probably no one, but how do you know?) etc.

Sorry to get on my high horse, but I don't see this information being processed over an SSL connection, which is the rock bottom minimum I would expect.

Registering for a store - fine. No problem with that. (IF it is encrypted, and IF it is stored securely) But not for a freebie, that's simply excessive.

Okay, I'll get off my soap box now.
Sorry, I don't intend any slight against the good intentions of the vendors -- but if you ask me for personal information, then in return, I feel it justified to ask what you're doing with that information.

P.S.
I know the individual vendors are okay. But I don't know that site. I have no way of knowing if it's legit or not, it's too new. (And even then you won't get that info from me.)

Make the address, phone number etc optional -- fine. No problem with that. Those who want to give that information can, those of us who don't, simply won't.

Yeah, I could just sign up with total baloney.
Fakeville is a popular town, you know. But I'd rather it was changed to optional so I'm not forced to lie. :)

It was a false positive. There is no virus / trojan there.  Zone Alarm is famous for those errors. I use CA Antivirus and I trust it with my life!  The site was fine for me.

No one says you have to give the right information for those fields.

I'm not advocating that you do this, but fill in generic information and give a valid email address.  Phil already has my address because I've bought things from him, so I have no problem giving it to that site.

I was a bit surprised at the site BUT reading carefully it says the sign up info will go ONLY to those vendors providing the freebies and I dont have an issue with that since I have dealt with Vanishing Point and Philc in the past.

From the site:

Giveaway Participation Rules

If you participate in a SMART Giveaway, your information will be shared with only participating vendors in the specific SMART Giveaway and treated as customer data for registration purposes, according to the specific customer data policy of the vendor.

Rule of Law

Smart Participation Rules are governed under the laws of the State of Oregon and the United States of America.

I do agree that all that info over a non-secure link is maybe unwise.  I will have to think about this.

What worries me more is that I now have a right click option called "SMART Naming " which appeared today. I hope thats a coincidence :(

It appears that you have the register. Once you do you get an email within 3 days with a link to download the items.

"This recommendation is based upon how long the site has been around"

What can I say, the site went live last Friday. Zone Alarm is apparently suggesting that you wait three months.

I think I and my reputation have been around much longer than Zone Alarm. As have most if not all of the other members. Its entirely up to you. We are just trying to give away some freebies to promote an association of a few Poser content creators. I'm hoping that this will spawn some cool joint projects that the Poser community will enjoy.

Will we be fine tuning the site? Well yes certainly. All of us are proficient in our areas of 3D creation, but not all of us are super wiz at HTML. Considering all the elements involved I feel that the wordpress blog template was a pretty good start, but it is only a start.

Porthos ( ) posted Tue, 13 October 2009 at 7:04 AM

Phil, I'm not well up on HTML etc. either, which is why I rely and ZAP and an AV sofware to keep my computer safe.

It wasn't my intention to diss any site, especially those that share their hard work for free. I'm always grateful for any freebies that talented people like yourself offer to the community.

Like you said, it's probably because the site is new, and ZA is just suggesting we use caution!

Cheers

Mary :)

Well... The freebies look nice, but I fail to see what all the registration is for. And "State/province" - required.. tell you what.. there IS no such thing here.. Other than the State of Denmark, which is rotten and all. Those things annoy me. There IS a world outside the US, guys. With no provinces or states or the like. At least make that an optional field.

And.. never look a given horse in the mouth.. but ... Suffice to say the only true thing I filled out in that registration was my email. Oh wait.. the country and zip code was right as well.. but the rest.. is my business and mine alone.

And please, Phil.. this is nothing personal. I know you wouldn't use the addresses for any nefarious things.. but who knows what a hacker would do?

That and it annoys me when an assumed sock puppet is used to announce the whole thing. Doesn't exactly add to the credibility...

I have requested the freebies, all that info for me is either public record or easily found. I will certainly complain if I start getting lots of cranky mail or phone calls.    I certainly think its overkill  for  a freebie , other sites just use a valid email for contact purposes.

The site appears to me to be a third party site pushing various vendors products of which Philc and the others are one promotion.  That makes me wonder just who have I fed that info to :(

It may be just an image issue but the feedback here doesnt seem to be good generally.

GeneralNutt ( ) posted Tue, 13 October 2009 at 11:09 PM

The freebies look great, but the info request is a little too expensive for my blood.

Helgard ( ) posted Wed, 14 October 2009 at 6:11 AM

As one of the members of the site, and one of the people participating in this give-away, I have noted all the concerns regarding our request for information.

This freebie is just a way of launching the site, and hopefully, from this small launch, many exciting things will follow. Our intention with this site is for various Poser vendors, like Vanishing Point, Meshbox and PhilC, to come together and pool our resources and expertise to create new products and tools for the Poser community, while still retaining our individual sites and independence.

We appreciate that some people may not want to give out the information we have requested, and we understand the concerns, and hopefully once the site has been around for a while and has done some of the interesting things we have planned, people will become a bit more trusting of us as a group as we know they are of us as individual entities.

Thanks for all the feedback so far.

Isn't the same info required over at DAZ3D to register (and therefore get freebies?)  I thought it was required here as well (at least for a purchase).

Registration doesn't bother me.  A lot of US sites require it.  I'm just grateful for the freebies!  Thanks for providing them!!

yup. you need to enter details like that for most stores you are buying at. and this is a store ppl, the items maybe free, but it's a store none the less....  did you complain when you had to enter the same details for Amazon, Tigerdirect, Newegg, Bigfish Games, Steam...... (and if anyone cries FREEBIES I point out Amazon offers freebies as does Big Fish Games, Steam etc....)

shrug I know I did'nt...

Helgard ( ) posted Wed, 14 October 2009 at 9:01 AM

Sorry, very important to note, this site is not a store. This site will not sell any products. It may advertise products that are available for sale on sites like Meshbox, PhilC, Vanishing Point and others, but the actual sales will be done on those sites.

This site is just a vehicle for us to work together on projects, combine advertising muscle and pool our resources. This site is not a brokerage, does not and will not handle any sales, and will never ask you for money. The sites and people it advertises are free to do so on their own particular sites.

This site will give away freebies, and be used to promote and market joint projects, new releases from independant stores, and to promote a culture of co-operation between various independant sites, who will always remain independant and handle their own sales.

Then, since it is NOT a store.. What in the world do you want my postal address and phone number for? Not that I think any of you would go all the way here to bother me personally, nor do I think tele marketers will make long distance calls abroad just to piss me off.. but that just goes to prove that your requirements are a little ... over the top.

And pissing off potential customers, where ever they may shop, isn't a good way to start a new venture. It just seems like you're doing just that.

I signed up at PhilC's site with all the correct names ect.  when I bought things from him. BUYING things are a quite different thing than downloading freebies.

I am a little disappointed by some of the comments in this forum. All the people involved in this initiative are trusted, well-known and long-standing members of this community. They have come together to work on new projects which we believe will benefit the community as a whole. There are some really exciting and far reaching projects planned.

Yes, maybe we asked for more information than we needed, but that would be a simple mistake which we will rectify next time round, not a willful attempt to scam members of this community.

What will we use this information for? To notify you about more freebies, joint projects being run between the sites participating in this and other offers.

Between Vanishing Point, PhilC and Meshbox we most probably have your information already, and have any of us used this to run a scam, to spam you with unwanted information or to cause harm in any way?

To be worried that this information may be hacked is one thing, but to imply that we will use this to abuse any members of this community is an insult to the good name of the sites participating in this.

Maybe it would be better to accept this new site in the spirit in which it was intended, for people who have knowledge and skills to come together and pool that to help this community, create new tools and products that may be better than what they could create on their own, and to foster a spirit of co-operation, instead of competition, between the independant sites.

Yes the point has been well made by you and several others. It has certainly been taken on board by us.

Probably the only guy who has never looked back and thought, "umm yes that could probably have been done better", is someone who has not done anything. Suffice to say that revisions are in hand and will be in place before the next round of freebies go up.

Which brings me to ...... are you enjoying the freebies?

JOELGLAINE ( ) posted Thu, 15 October 2009 at 6:17 AM

Having just opened up last Friday, most people do NOT have freebies as yet.  For freebies, I founfd the 'required information' to be overly invasive.  At a no-store site, you can't even sign in at, the information smacks of all the spam sites out there.  Thing is, I DO trust you guys, but my in-box is choked with spam and my phone rings off the wall with tele-marketers, so I do not appreciate HAVING to hand out information to anyone!

So I lied like a dog on everything except my email address. Nothing personal, but I am TIRED of being burned all the damned time.  If ALL you guys need is my email, why not just ask for that upfront and be done with it?  Why trawl for so much information? I hate lying only less than being asked for all my life information all the time.

Ah grow up!

How's that for heavy handed? Privacy is an illusion, and frankly all these laws and jibber jabber just add fuel to the fire.

If someone wants your personal information bad enough, they ARE going to get it.  And if you think they don't already have it, somewhere, on some site, then you are just fooling yourself.

There are better ways of protecting yourself than hammering on good-intentioned people, who DO have excellent reputations.

IMHO the people involved in this venture are beyond repute! They have been in the business for a long time and I would think that their reputations are very important to them. Because of that I trust them enough to give my contact information to.

To those that are concerned about registering in order to get the links.  That's too bad, because it's definitely your loss.  These models are excellent quality.
