Here's a wip of a pair of gauges. Still a bit rough atm. Just have to figure out how to get the numbers and graduations on the clock face. Comments welcome as always.

I'd just use a texture for the numbers. at this scale, you wont see the difference between a texture and a mesh unless you do a real closeup.

WIP of another bit to be found in the driver's cab against the boiler backhead. Not sure what this does, 'cept maybe it has something to do with the brakes. Of course if you happen to know please tell me! C&Cs welcome as always.

Found a great DVD on line all about the Flying Scotsman's travels after the last complete overhaul and technical unpgrades. Shows a good deal of the driver's cab/footplate and details I hadn't seen before. Cost me £6.98 inc postage and arrived two days after ordering on line! Awesome!

WIP Update. C&Cs welcome. This mechanism fits onto the backhead, between the two water gauges. The long shaft extends the width of the boiler and has a long red lever attached to each end.

electroglyph ( ) posted Sun, 10 January 2010 at 5:42 AM

That's your throttle lever. There's a cam inside that case connected to a pushrod. The push rod goes down the center of the engine inside the boiler to the throttle valve located under the steam dome. Pushing the lever foreward pops the valve open and lets steam pressure out the top of the boiler. The piece with the two bolts pushes a fiber gasket in around the shaft and keeps steam from blowing out. It has to be mirrored on the other side if you don't have a photo from that angle.

Not exactly your engine, but here's a diagram of generic controls. Theres also some good animations showing operation of the johnson bar, walschaert valve gear, etc.

Electro - you're a star!
I know about the gasket/ (steam-gland packing IIRC)  - god knows I've re-packed enough of them in the navy. ;-) I do have pics of the other side.
Many thanks for the link.
