I just discovered Dream Theater. If you like Rush you'e gonna love this band. On the other hand if you're a prog rock fan then you probably already know ten times more than me about them.

I just learned about them recently. Here's something (you may already know about this), but there's a web site called 'lastfm'. You go to their 'radio', then enter a band name. It plays that band, then other bands that are similar. I've learned about a lot of good bands that way lately. Enter 'Dream Theatre', and see what you get (some of the stuff can be dated, if the band's been around awhile, that's the only realy caveat)

Have fun

One of my son's favorites.  He has seen them live a couple times. The drummer is beyond belief.  I'm not really fond of the singer even though I have a couple of their tracks on my HD.

Have you ever heard any of NightWish's stuff?

I've been playing catchup lately because I present a rock show on hospital radio - hence I keep 'discovering' bands that have been around for decades that have somehow slipped under my radar.

Funny you should mention Nigthwish. Recently discovered them...they remind me of a cross between Rennaisance and Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow...;)

Here's a sample of the music, though the lyrics may not be what they say...;) (It's a joke, I say, a joke, son...;)

Nice lyrics. I prefer more old school prog. There are a few bands that do more of the old school type prog. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nbXl1gX7TQ or how about some flower Kings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLxEfWoOYoA

I'm not much for fish, but mainly I'm broke...;) Thanks for the invite, tho. Been to Lost Colony in my yute...;)

Let me see what I can dredge up here for band names. Some are prog, some are probably not. Last FM and the other sites I hang out at have some strange idea as to what's what...

Spock's beard
30 seconds to Mars ( I think...)
Marillion
Amethystium
Ayria
Boards of Canada (mainly synth stuff)
Gentle Giant? They're always put forward as Prog...very old band
Muse (maybe)
Porcupine tree
Pure REason revolution (kinda)
Sirenia (not sure)
Flower kings already mentioned...
Riverside (Polish band, they are prog...but hard to find...they're on Lastfm, tho)
Tiamat -( I think)
for some reason, Tool is put forward as prog (huh?)
Tristiana - mebbe
Visions of Atlantis ( I think)

sorry I can't check these, but you know you can only keep a post open so many minutes. Apologies if some of these turn out 'wrong'...;)

Speaking as someone who also used to do a rock show on hospital radio (1988-84), the first DT album (When Dream & Day Unite, the only one with the original singer) was a featured album on my show when it first came out.

A few bands I'd add to the list:

Mostly Autumn
Astra
Diagonal

Within Temptation (similar to Nightwish)
Epica (Likewise)
Gong
Ozric Tentacles
Darwin's Radio
Ayreon
Transatlantic (a prog supergroup comprising DT's drummer, Spock's Beard's (former) singer/keyboard player, Marillion's bass player, & Flower Kings' guitarist.  Their new album is a double & the 77-minute title track takes up the entire 1st disc!)

There are lots more where those came from, I've been a prog fan for almost 40 years & have around 500 albums (mostly prog, though not all) ;)

Dream Theater is an awesome band. I've been into them since around '92. "Under A Glass Moon" is one of the hardest guitar solos I've ever tried to learn. My band used to cover Pull Me Under and Take the Time off that album. I'm also a big fan of Triumph.

Nightwish is one of my favorite 3 bands (in close running with Queensryche and Celldweller) - my friend Chris turned me onto them about 9 years ago. I like the early stuff, but I also like the new singer, I think she fits in well with how they've evolved. In fact I'm listening to that album (Dark Passion Play) right now. Do any of you folks listen to Lacuna Coil or Echoes of Eternity? Two other great bands.

FYI - have you seen Gina Pitkanen's paintings of Nightwish (with former singer Taarja)? Awesome. I think they were either here or at RDNA gallery a few years back, but I can't find them now.

OT - I played guitar for a while in the 90's with Canada's Thor, and we covered "Court of the Crimson King" on his Thunderstruck album in '98. I played keyboards and guitar on it. I don't know if it's still in print, but if you're a fan of old-school prog, you might like it. :)

I was never a big fan of Dream Theater, although they do have a cool habit where if they're playing the same  place for a few nights, they'll sometimes play a whole cover album instead of all their stuff. I have them doing the complete 'Number of the Beast' album by Iron Maiden, and it's not bad at all considering it's just John Petrucci on guitar!

Love Lacuna Coil which Foleypro got me into. They sound just like Evenescence - almost the same set up too.

Lacuna Coil's version of Enjoy the Silence (by Depeche Mode) is very good, plus Cristina Scabbia is hot hot hot! :). She does a good guest vocal on the version of  'A Tout Le Monde' on Megadeth's United Abominations album as well.
Evanescence I saw at Download one year (below Iron Maiden), and politely put, were definately a studio band not a live one! ;) Don't get me wrong, I like them, and Bring Me to Life was one of the best songs released in the year it came out, but she sucked the big one on the stage. Shame really, I was really looking forward to them too.

For those who like lacuna coil and evanescence.. you might want to check out nightwish and within temptation :)
