Subject: Any interest in an open source character?

I am near the completion of what I feel is my first community presentable character. The design philosophy is similar to the DAZ unimesh but the base mesh is ultra-low resolution (6000 polys) and can support Level Of Detail for non-Poser programs but would be available as multi-resolution and / or high resolution meshes for Poser if desired.

The male and female meshes are nearly complete and I would like to make them freely available to the community as part of an "open humanoid" project. My animation pipeline is not Poser-centric and while it may be presumptuous to ask: it would be awesome for DPHoadly to remap it, PhilC to provide Wardrobe Wizard support, someone to rig it, facial expressions, character morphs, etc. Again, I will add these features for projects specific to my pipeline but would happily offer the meshes to the community since one can never have enough free characters in their Runtimes.

While I don't have any render samples available, I have attached a low poly "display preview" screengrab as she receives her default UVs. Would love to hear your thoughts; thanks in advance.

The face (not default). Forgot to mention that these figures aren't entirely "anatomically correct" since that won't be necessary for my projects, but I have no  objection to "aftermarket parts".

6000 polys should be easy to remap.  I'd suggest that you have her rigged with Posette's bones, so thus she could use Posette's default wardrobe, and automatically be WW compatible.  Give her a set of genitals too, or make an alternative hip (That's activated by clicking Genitalia in the Figure's menu of the top menu bar), such as Judy, Dork, Don, & Mike 2, all have, and that way you cover all bases at once.

If you could make her hips just a wee bit more rounded (curvaceous), such as Posette's, and she'd be out of sight!!

Open source characters are always good. I'd help, but I somewhat have my hands full.

Is that 6000 polys with or without teeth?

I thinkk it's a great idea. And I second David's idea of rigging her Posette style. There's a lot of useable clothes out there for Posette, and the WardrobeWizard compatibility is an added bonus.

If you don't mind me saying so, there's still something wrong with the shape of her head. It looks like a mask, like she doens't have any back of the skull. Might be the angle though, and God knows I couldn't model a fact this pretty. Just.. it annoys me that I can't set a finger on what is wrong with the head, only that there's "something"

All very good suggestions.

Rigging for Posette is a great idea. I could try to rig it myself but the setup room is a scary place for me - I've come to prefer weight mapping. Rounded hips, check.

TrekkieGrrl, I think what irks you is the way that the skull meets the ear. This is an artifact of the lack of detail around the top of the ear. I'm hesitant to add extra detail (since most of the time it would be covered with hair) but I'll see if I can sculpt it better.

The teeth are hidden from the viewport and I think hidden from the onscreen poly counter. They are equally low poly adding I think 750 polys for 28 teeth, gums and tongue.

This is a wonderful idea. Any chance for a peek at the male mesh?

replicand ( ) posted Thu, 22 October 2009 at 6:25 PM

I lied. Inner mouth parts add a substantial number of faces. Total face count: 7392

Male mesh will be up as soon as the default UV maps are in place.

That's still pretty impressive. I asked because 6000 polys - give or take a few - is what I ended up with for my model, before adding the inner mouth bits and some other details. I think 6000 is a good number for a human mesh. There's enough detail for a believable shape, but the density is still low enough to make vertex-by-vertex sculpting feasible.

(Unfortunately, the final poly count for mine was more like 9500.)

@odf - I'm looking forward to seeing your work. I've heard very good things so far.

@trekkiegrrl - I shaped the ear / skull union a bit and upon thinking about, I see what you mean. This character lacks "skull depth" at the back of the head, above the neck. An easy fix.

Daniel v. 1.3.4, hand painted prototype texture (very dark, not color corrected), receiving sculpture on oversized face, in progress; <=5600 faces without eyes and mouth parts.

This is the Chloe mesh, sculpted into a male so textures and rigging transfer from one character to another. More to follow....

Comments, criticisms (positive and negative, both meshes) and suggestions welcomed and encouraged.

I recommend you read the Poser EULA for use of the content. I believe using the Rigging would be a derivative of the figure.

Sixus had some Open Source Figures available in the past.. not sure where they are now. You may be able to use their Rigging. Not sure how that OSL is written.
