Subject: Is Scanner Done For, Unfixable? Ready for the Trash?

I have an HP flatbed scanner 7400 series with several dependable years of occasional use.

I scanned two photos to copy and the scans are unusable.  There are no extreme settings affecting the scans.

See the dots in the second picture and the bad color problems in the first scanned photo?
What do you think..I don't know much about scanners or how the image is actually scanned but it appears either the internal hardware is dying or the software is missing a few pieces.

Is it ready for the trash?

Second picture...colored salt and pepper.

Look at wrist watch strap and chair back in foreground for obvious spotting.

ZOOM FOR A GOOD LOOK.   Photos ware at about  50% size in Photoshop™ when cropped and saved.

That scanner appears to be a discontinued model. Here is the support page link regarding SCAN QUALITY issues.

I’ve gotten very similar looking results from both of my Epson scanners when I inadvertently scanned photos with the “document type” set for film.

A quick “Google” said your scanner is also a film scanner (?).

The first photo has me puzzled. It looks exactly like too much exposure adjustment. However, the problems in the second photo may be caused by spots on the film.

It is better to do one thing well, than to do many things and excel at nothing.
