Subject: creating flickering light

Hi everyone;

How can I create a flickering light effect with poser for an animation?

Something like the light from a fire reflecting on walls or characters, or maybe like flickering light in a club (disco, whatever)

I have some fire / pyro stuff i purchased here, but it is designed for still life

I am guessing by altering color in frames, but i don't know

You can use a random number generator. I hand keyed the light intensity of my avatar to match the flames.

that's a good idea.  I've actually tried that with a tone generator.  it's not truly random, but picking instantaneous samples from a sine wave like that can produce a pattern that rarely repeats over a long range of samples.

You will probably find that using either a noise node (or better) a turbulence or similar node will give you a randomness to the flicker.

this is one of those things where you're better off breaking up the problem. People often look at renders and think that the whole thing was rendered as one pass-- this is just the kind of scene where that will make you pull your hair out (and push your render times to the moon.)

. . . don't use a real light. Use some stock footage of a fire as a reflection map (Poser supports animated maps).  Much, much, much faster, and will give you a more predictable result.

There's a big difference between fire a a reflection, and fire as diffuse lighting-- the diffuse lighting needs a real light, the reflection doesn't

Once again about animated maps. Can this be done in Poser 6, and if so..what do I do..import it in as an avi?

Hi radstorm,
   All of the formentioned features are avalable in the P6 Material Room. Right click on the palette create a new node the math node is under math, the frame number node is under variables and the movie node is under 2D textures.
   Lighting is very sceen specific, the shader (or gel) that I posted was for a point light from a candle animated at 10fps. It was exactly what I wanted but is not the end all of flickering lighting shaders. We can make lights blink, flash, strobe, fade in or out, the possibilities are endless.
   I would love to help you with the math, but I am probably not the person to teach you how to create and hook up the nodes. Please see one of the hundreads of tutorials on the material room (there is a sticky at the top of this forum with lots of links.) Or find Doc Geeps P5 material room tute I think it covers all the basics.
