Subject: Are you a real photographer?

TwoPynts ( ) posted Tue, 17 November 2009 at 8:27 AM · edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 3:44 PM

Not from me, saw it on a photo blog. Gave me a chuckle. :) ----- Ask yourself these 10 questions 1. Do you roll your eyes in exasperation when you see a blizzard of tiny photo-flashes twinkling amongst the crowd at some humongous great sports stadium? 2. Do you know what ‘bokeh’ is? 3. Do you genuinely wince in pain when an elderly relative asks you if you’ve taken any good ‘snaps’ lately? 4. Do you always carry a spare battery? Charged? 5. Do your friends hand you their cameras when they want a good photo taken? 6. Do you own a tripod? Not one of those diddy little things that slip in your pocket. A real tripod. That weighs a ton. 7. And do you carry it about with you? And hang your backpack from it? And know why you’re hanging your backpack from it? 8. Has your spouse/partner given up groaning in exasperation when you climb out of bed at 4am on a frosty morning? 9. Did you start asking what shutter speed and aperture was used for a photograph ... and now given up asking? 10. Do people look at you as if you’re crazy when you point your camera at a chunk of rock or similar, apparently featureless object? If you can answer yes to all these questions – congratulations. You’re a real photographer.

Except that I am too old to have living elderly relatives to inquire about my "snaps" I will claim the title of real photographer.

ROTFLOL!!! Kort, you made my day!

I am a photographer, I really am a photographer (trying to imitate Sally Fields voice)!

Some of those questions were kind of like "DUH", who doesn't carry around a couple of spare "charged" batteries, an extra memory card or two (or 3), half a dozen filters, maybe more then one tripod (not exactly a Gorillapod, but you get the picture), and sometimes more then one camera???

LOL! Thanks Kort!

If I remember well the last time i used a real tripod was in Peru in 1980. Since i hadn't the guts to abandon it, i let it around until it was stolen. I felt much better. My hands can handle nitroglicerin safely or, to put it in another way, i might be a sniper. I made my baptism of fire at demonstrations and riots in Europe and elsewhere, so I consider myself a war photographer, and currently a 'street' photograper. Difficult to use a tripod when they're are throwing Molotov cocktails or selling drugs... better being inconspicuous, and never use a camera that may be mistaken for a gun, ot that invite mugging ;-D
Am I still to be considered a REAL photographer or not? Actually I answered yes only at questions no. 4 and 10 .....;-D
Ciao,
Sandra

 9. Did you start asking what shutter speed and aperture was used for a photograph ... and now given up asking?

hee hee =)

  1. Do you find yourself right clicking on a photo for properties and then groan because the photo was taken by a 5D MkIII (and then realise why it looks so damned crisp because the photographer wouldnt put anything but L glass on it)?

did that the other day...

I really got a kick out of #1 and # 10, because I would be the one at the stadium standing over a piece of trash trying to make an artistic shot out of it!!! LOL :P

I always have a camera with me, a handy one, very inconspicuous, and i have a second camera most often than not.

LovelyPoetess ( ) posted Wed, 18 November 2009 at 8:41 PM

Too funny!

and I couldn't answer yes to #1only because I don't habitate large sports stadiums....

They say a picture is worth a thousand words...

So where do they go when a photograph leaves you speechless?

TomDart ( ) posted Thu, 19 November 2009 at 10:18 PM

Poetess, any stadium will do...that tiny flash is going to carry the distance? Not.  Now, with flash that shoots auto in any dim light I doubt many even think about it.  Likely, many do not know how to shut the flash off in the first place.

I do have the tripod with me and monopod... but not always on me.

Well, even if a kind Irish man who saw me unpack a few prints I had made said about the photos he saw..."You really have a fine camera!"    I am still a photographer, and yes, I am behind that camera and it does pretty much what I decide.   It does not frame my image composition on any auto setting I can find.  :  )

I took his comment as a compliment.  That is really what he meant...I think.   LOL.          Tom.

I could not answer yes to several of the above LOL, Hate using a tripod and I always forget my backup battery. But...

I found the following  photographer definitions

answers.com - One who practices, or is skilled in, photography.
thefreedictionary.com - a person who takes photographs, either as a hobby or a profession.
dictionary.reference.com - a person who takes photographs, esp. one who practices
                                                photography professionally.

I just enjoy taking pictures :)

Hmmm ... 7 out of 10.  I have a good tripod but don't use it very often, and don't own a backpack, and don't get up at 4:00 in the morning for ANYthing!!  LOL!  I only ask questions about aperture and shutter speed when I want to know if there's a way to get around the limitations of my little camera, because what you did with YOUR fancy camera isn't going to help me a bit!  :P

I must be doing something else other than photography ...  I'll have to think about that for a while.

Could be the definition is really in the photos.  Humm...does that make sense?

If so, you are one.

auntietk ( ) posted Sat, 05 December 2009 at 10:57 PM

Why, thank you!  :)  I certainly FEEL like a photographer!  It occurs to me, though (and more than once) that I'm more of an artist than a photographer.  (If THAT distinction makes any sense!)   I know a lot more about Photoshop than I do about my camera.
