Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 18 10:25 pm)
For me its mostly a part time hobby, I have used it for User Experience Design, to create some of the persona's used within the design process (to put a picture to persona created).

Funny you should ask that: when I bring up 3D to non-Poser people, they invariably ask: "What the heck do you do with the pictures??" It seems really hard to give as a reason: "oh, I post my images in a gallery..." - doesn't seem to carry enough validity, does it?
Be interesting to see what others say.
Me, I render primarily to test new shaders. I'm not an artist, so composition is still very much a mystery to me. I'll get it eventually, tho...

well............
I had a website where we 3d artist types could make our pics into stand alone jigsaw puzzles.
I have over 400. I need 97 bucks to put the site back up(donations???) lol
I also had some animated screen savers.
Currently I just today made a bitchin flash slide show with movie sound. Turned out pretty darn cool :)
'Second use' beyond just posting them here in the gallery is my goal. :P
I've done almost a dozen book covers over the years, but no one ever pays. Been published in many magazines and downloadable mags. Also no one ever pays.
Even had a college down in south america use a bunch of my pinups as teaching tool.
Been selected for the scifi channel a couple of times.
And made a bunch of custom art for an HBO Documentary about CG porn.
and on and on..............
It's mostly personal stuff - galleries and product promo art, toolwise a mix of poser and vue.
Technciquies can be anything.
The few times it's pro stuff, it's mostly photos or photos with added CG. Then technque tends to be simple, mostly so the image can be recreated quickly. Say if they need a bigger image for printing larger.
Like this month I've been really lucky to get a full page article about my new site in a UK regional magazine. That was made using my freebie DSU backgound kit with photos of an office block exteror (shot on a sunday so no people in it) and a 3d model rendered using a custom GI light set in Vue.
Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.
Quote - well............

what is CG porn? lol. I guess that is a big part of the render market.
I can't view any of it, all my internet ports are behind firewalls that shield me from those websites.

Lots of different reasons for my renders.
The organization I work with, I introduced and instructed them to the 3D age for instrucitonal education, very proud of that.
Next illustrations for another organization I was invited to assist with children who are abused.
A few personal illustrations, a couple for instructional books....lots of variety out there for Render use.
I will never leave the 3D world, it is just too interesting and versitle. Sharen
I've done some game art (box covers etc. not meshes!) along with some business "concept" stuff through a stock library

I do this purely for my own enjoyment and challenge to bring my personal characters to life. I stick them up on DA to get half a dozen hits, and that's about it.
I recently made my first commercial project with poser 8. Funny enough without any human model. But I was so impressed with the new IBL lighting of Poser 8, that I had to give it a try and the results were stunning.
I made an interior scene for a project of my sister in law, and she was very happy with the results and so were her clients.
It proves it's possible to make professional work with poser.
If I have time I post an image in the gallery .
best regards,
Bopper.

Poser is a hobby for me.

it keeps me out of the pool halls...;) I do it for fun; I've actually printed some out on photo paper to decorate my cubicle, but that's about it. A small number of freebie models, because I like doing that.
but professional? @#$% no...;)

Most of my still renders are demos of models (I'm learning modeling); my gallery has one demo of a model by Merlin, and the rest are promos of my freebie models.
I do make wallpaper (desktop background) images fairly often.
A big chunk of my render work is PNG frames for video/flash; I like to animate.
Since my real life work deals much with mayhem, I use 3D as a relief to dwell on that which is good, that which is beautiful.
I don't do any commercial work.

At this point it's mainly a hobby for me. I like to explore different methods of creating art - I'm into photography, computer art, as well as such archaic and esoteric forms of art such as drawing (with a pencil - gasp!). I'll admit that I certainly wouldn't mind doing this as a profession, but there's such an overload of talented artists out there that it will probably remain a hobby for the forseeable future.I am planning on using some of my renders on my new, updated website - if I ever get around to updating it in between all the other stuff life throws in my path ;-)

Poser 7 with SR2 seems pretty stable to rely on for deadlines.
I mean, other than using Poser to make stuff to sell to Poser users,
do you use it for professional work? Like illustrations, children's party invitations, etc?
I've done a few bookcovers, but otherwise, my renders are for websites and for the Rendo Gallery. My render life would be spectacularly boring without the rendo gallery to post my hobby.
I bought one of those kodak 4x6 docking station printers. So, if an excuse comes up in a conversation I can whip out renders. Thanksgiving is at my cousin's tomorrow, I'm looking forward to toting my photo album of renders. Which reminds me to pull out the nudey renders before showing the album to my Aunties and Uncles.
Happy Hollidays!
