I am teaching myself Argile, ZBrush and Mudbox, and for my education I have decided to make muscle maps and a high rez displacement map (for the muscles) for Vincent Parker.

I have run into a little snag. I need some reference pictures for the hands, feet, back of the head, side of the head, top of the shoulders, etc. I have searched the net but the free images I found so far have only taken me this far (and they were veryu small images), so I need to find better reference pictures.

Does anyone know of a book that has suitable pictures, or a website? I have a few art books on human anatomy, but they are all black and white. I saw an excellent book online made by Reader's Digest called the Illustrated Book of Anatomy or something, but not sure if it has all the pictures I need in there.

The picture above is the results of one days work in Argile. I also have a high rez sculpt in ZBrush, but I haven't exported that yet. I may put up pictures of that later.

I've been pursuing the same thing for a while,  The one website that gave me the best reference is no longer free  - www.visiblebody.com/start - There is, however, a free trial - might be worth a look

After a while, going by still images became very limiting.

good luck

Thanks, I checked out the site before but didn't find much help there. I also got a CDRom called The Human Body, with 3D images, but again, very small and not much help. If I could get a book, I could scan the images at high rez, which will be better quality than anything I could find on the net.

I went down to the local book shops and looked at the medical books, anatomy, etc, but they had either too few pictures to justify the 40 Euro price tags, or else the images were too cartoony or stylised.

colours not much, but the anatomy's dead on.www.bartleby.com/107/ - Gray's Anatomy (1918 Edition)  Online.

T hanks.

May take a while to match up the colours, but the muscles are really clear. I suppose I am going to end up hand repainting a lot of the stuff anyway, once I have the placement correct. No-one said it would be easy...

It's black and white, but really thorough. What do I know? I don't draw, I just model.

The "gold standard" for anatomy illustrations is Frank Netter.

Here's one useful-looking site (seems to require registration):

http://www.netterimages.com/

If you google for Frank Netter anatomy or  F.Netter anatomy, you'll probably find a lot more.

Ockham,

Perfect images, but one small little problem...

"Product Description 750x341 px, 115.4 KB RGB JPG"

Price =  $1,105.00

But yes, that is exactly what I was looking for... except for the price...

Darkedge,

I have that video tutorial, excellent for the modelling. I have no problem with the modelling, that is coming along great, it is just the texture that requires reference images.

For the modelling I can use the black and white images and the art books I have for reference to see the muscle layers and connections and flow, but the texturing is turning into a nightmare. I have so many different sources that the colours are no longer matching, some parts look ultra real, some look cartoony, and some just look wrong, lol. I can see myself hand painting the entire thing when I am finished just to match the colours and styles.
