Subject: OMG - Have any of you tried Photoshop cs4 extended for texture painting??????

Photopium ( ) posted Sat, 12 December 2009 at 1:02 PM · edited Thu, 21 November 2024 at 4:34 PM

??????

Just got to playing with this today, and OMG...FINALLY the Best possible way to texture stuff for Poser!

Project, Liquify, MFING LAYERS!!!, blend, clone, or just plain ole paint a UV'd object...all exactly the way you'd expect for it to work in Photoshop.

Not some half-baked feature tacked on unfinished to the product, the 3d paint is locked and loaded and ready to go, and I can't imagine anything missing to what you can do.

This is, as far as I'm concerned, the biggest breakthrough for the community at large since...I don't even know.

Evidently, you can build mesh from 2d in there too, but I have no idea what that's all about.

I can't believe I haven't heard anyone else rave about this yet.

Who can afford the update.....sigh.. ...

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound

i heard that there a good 3D painting softwares out. photoshop was from what i know the worst.

so did they change anything? must try it out.

Photopium ( ) posted Sat, 12 December 2009 at 1:37 PM

Change anything?  No, this is all new for Cs4 extended.  I can't imagine anyone calling this the worst, unless they are so into zbrush that everything else seems silly.  I could never quite figure out zbrush's learning curve...however, I (Like many of you) already dominate Photoshop, and therefore this is the "Best" as far as I'm concerned.

LostinSpaceman ( ) posted Sat, 12 December 2009 at 2:02 PM

I have CS4 Extended but haven't attempted painting 3D Objects yet. I'd love to see a tutorial for those of us who haven't "dominated" Photoshop! LOL!

How do you get all of the obj elements (rleg, lleg, vneck etc) say off the Bodysuit onto one map?

I did the painting, but had different maps/layers for the bodyparts.
I had to create a new document and load each layer in, THEN merge the layers. (I imported straight from the GEOMETRIES folder)

Very time consuming....

Unless there was something I missed....
(LIGHTBULb MOMENT)...From POSER save out as one .obj then import that .obj into PSHOP, do the painting and...are the UV's kept if I do this?

Sharen means never used it for that. I'm sure she uses it for resizing her images and other stuff.

Yes, estherau, but I will have to tap into again and see if it is something I would use.  I think I tried it once to actually map the object, but did not like the outcome.

For the cost, you probably should consider Cinema 4D/Bodypaint, which is actually a very powerful modeler and pretty much the industry standard for texturing 3D.  It also does Photoshop layers, along with projection painting, UVmapping, and tons of other things.  Makes many tools obsolete.

Well, I haven't gotten too deeply into it yet, been away at work all day.  I imagine that selecting only certain groups to work with at a time and all that might not be fully implementd...don't know.  Not too hard though to export obj's of whatever you want to work with with other materials/groups absent.  But yes, I think every material has a seperate map.  Easy to merge though, no?

Again, don't want cinema 4d, zbrush, et. al. when i already know how to use Photoshop.  I can model in Max and am getting pretty good at uvmapping there too.

hborre ( ) posted Sat, 12 December 2009 at 10:09 PM

I tried it and I was not very impressed by how it handles for texturing 3d.  Have abandoned that aspect for now.

AprilYSH ( ) posted Sun, 13 December 2009 at 12:31 AM

yes, i love it :)  i upgraded to cs4 a while ago but only just tried the 3d painting about a month ago and ended up playing in it for a couple of weeks, it's SO much fun!!!

it's NOT the same as the "3d" in cs3. this is direct painting ON the object and seeing the result ON the objest, not some 2d painting to 3d preview like in cs3.
(maybe in cs5 we'll get rigging and morphs enabled too, that would be cool... dreams)

it can handle layered UVs fine, each material works on its own .psb file which you can open and put into your regular .psd file.

  • import your object, no mess, no fuss about modifying uvs or materials just for cs4 8)
  • look in the 3d pane and select each material and load an empty texture file at the correct dimensions to start on. the default is too small, like 512x512pixels iirc, while I like to work on 4096x4096 ... you will see the difference pretty early on if you forget to do this.
  • paint away with your favourite and familiar photoshop tools and brushes!!! <--- this is what makes it so good for me. i don't have to learn another app with different tools and brushes, presets, texture resources, etc.  i've been working with ps (and painter) for sooo many years, they're a second skin.  makes it totally worth the adobe lifetime tithing and/or firstborn fee  chuckles
  • you can choose to paint for diffuse, bump, etc... have only been doing diffuse and bump so far so i can't say how the others go.

i love it... hugs little cs4 box that came with no printed manual but i don't miss it anyway

so, i'll stop now... heehee

You're right though, morphs and joints would be great, especially in the head...eyes closed, mouth open, etc.

wingnut1 ( ) posted Sun, 13 December 2009 at 4:21 AM

I have been using Photoshop for years. The learning curve is steep for beginners, but probably not so bad for people already using Poser or 3D programs. The 3D options for CS4 Extended are a nice touch imho.

ice-boy ( ) posted Sun, 13 December 2009 at 6:54 AM

i have an old photoshop and blender. blender is free and supports now projection painting. you take a screencap and then paint on it. very fast and free.

i tryed years ago bodypaint. its 100% the best 3d texturing software. its beyond good.

This sounds really cool. I'll put it on my wish list for santa. :)

CS4 is a big improvement I have not dominated it yet :) I have been using 3DCoat with CS4, because 3D coat integrates with CS4 so I can use the Photoshop functions in 3D Coat and hop back and forth between the two. It's like having all the functions of both apps in one big 3D suite.

3Dsk has the best source pics I have found.

I think I just remembered why I couldn't register at poser addicts 2 last time.  everytime I type in the number code to confirm registration it tells me I got it wrong, but some of them were really simple and I am sure I got it right. I had caps lock on but I even tried off.
