no wonder thebryster lives there! most of the pix are so bryce-ish! btw.. since we can enlarge them..can we use them as mats? copyright issues?

peedy ( ) posted Fri, 15 January 2010 at 12:15 AM

Beautiful!
I am afraid there will be issues.
It says, on the pics:
Copyright NASA and EPA.
Pity, would love to use them.

You can use them as mats............you just can't publish them here.
I just wish they'd stop throwing junk up here.

Rosie? I got this from the NASA website:

http://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/multimedia/gtv_copyright.html

NASA and Copyright Regulations

01.04.06

NASA images generally are not copyrighted. You may use NASA imagery, video and audio material for educational or informational purposes, including photo collections, textbooks, public exhibits and Internet Web pages. This general permission does not include the NASA insignia logo (the blue "meatball" insignia), the NASA logotype (the red "worm" logo) and the NASA seal. These images may not be used by persons who are not NASA employees or on products (including Web pages) that are not NASA sponsored.

If the NASA material is to be used for commercial purposes, especially including advertisements, it must not explicitly or implicitly convey NASA's endorsement of commercial goods or services. If a NASA image includes an identifiable person, using the image for commercial purposes may infringe that person's right of privacy or publicity, and permission should be obtained from the person.

On the face of this I would say you are ok to use their images of Mars.

But these have the C in a circle on them!

AnnieD ( ) posted Fri, 15 January 2010 at 1:39 PM

The c in the circle means its copyrighted to them...what bryster found was pretty much their consent to use their copyrighted material...under their conditions.

Ok, I've sent a site-mail to Admin to see what the official take is on this. So please hangtight before posting any renders using NASA pics.

Chris, I think you hit it right in the explanatory posting of you found on the web.  I looked into this sometime ago.  (actually you remember the images I made of you in a space suit on the surface of Mars as a spoof? Those were NASA astronaut photos)

My understanding was exactly as you said.  The images a pretty much for public consumption. NASA and JPL doesn't want someone using their logos or the images as a misrepresentation of them endorsing user stuff.  That was what I read then.

There is a NASA pic of the moon somewhere. I've used it before.
Rosie? I'm just waiting on Rendo's take on NASA's copyright rules. I wouldn't want you to post something and get busted for it. Just hangtight for a few.

I'm not wanting to supplant Bryster's request, Rosie but I posted this in gallery and noted it was from NASA and didn't get spanked. Maybe it slipped by them so wait for Bryster's **official** okay.

erosiaart ( ) posted Sat, 16 January 2010 at 7:49 PM

i know I used the blue marble somewhere.. and one other starry pix as a background..
Willie.. we maybe we didn't get caught..  but it is so better to be safe than sorry..and better late than never to find out..

clay ( ) posted Sat, 16 January 2010 at 8:09 PM

Read the usage info on those sites, as long as you don't put those on a CD etc for distribution you're good as gold.

Sorry I missed getting the original email on the 15th. Thank you Bryster for resending to me today.  As Bryster pointed out, the NASA copyright policy allows for usage, so it's ok to use them for your images that get posted here.  And, as Clay mentioned, they are should be used for any type of distribution.

Thanks for double checking...even though you were already on the right path! :)

Let me jump on JeniferC's statement, in otherwords don't put all their junk on a site or cd and try to sell it, otherwise use at will:-)
