Subject: How much would it cost

JLSstudio ( ) posted Tue, 19 January 2010 at 11:37 AM · edited Fri, 20 December 2024 at 12:53 AM

to have an original Poser character created fully rigged and ready to animate based on my original art and description?

flexo ( ) posted Tue, 19 January 2010 at 11:40 AM

You mean ... a character not based on M4/V4 or any of the existing models or morphs ?
so a new model with it's own skeleton and original morphs ?

JLSstudio ( ) posted Tue, 19 January 2010 at 11:45 AM

well I don't really care if its based off one of those pre-existing characters as long as it looks like my artwork.  I just want a few Original characters that can't be purchased by anyone so that my animations aren't just cookiecutter copy versions of everyone elses does that make sense?

A figure is the actual model.. Think M4 aka "Johnny Depp" the actor.

A character is what the model (actor)  turns into once in costume, hair and makeup.....IE: Edward Scissorhands.

Are there guidelines anywhere... Surely you don't want to go to the trouble of producing a quote just to have the buyer say yikes, that's 10X what I thought it would be

Recently I saw someone offer $30 for two figures to be made (modeled, uvmapped, rigged) with an offer of another $10 if they were textured, for a possible grand total of $40

What do you think like a new Poser DOG would cost... Nothing special about it. Basic textures and expression morphs. I guess whatever that price is, is about as cheap as it can get

It's not the tool used, it's the tool using it

Speaking as a fairly accomplished modeler and rigger and a not-so-great texturer, I'd pretty much laugh at that kind of offer.  Maybe 25 times that, for a single humanoid figure, for exclusive use.  Probably more.  I don't expect that offer had anyone jump on it, and if someone did then I'd like to see the finished piece(s).  It's not like you're gonna model, rig, and texture a humanoid figure in a day or two.

Pretty much any original rigged and textured model for exclusive sale is going to cost at least a few hundred dollars.

I said I'd rig it badly for $40, if he could get me the model

This is what i would probably make for $40. Uvs, textured, rigged, icons, packaged in runtime folders with a readme. Probably still take me 4 hours (cause Ima noobie) putting me at a whopping $10/hr.

I would certainly like to see pjz's #s, but my skill doesn't yet compair with his either.

I don't think anyone had much else to say - if you've modeled, uvmapped, textured and rigged any character from scratch (and you have) then you know it's not a 1-2 day exercise. You can flip through Phantom3D's Brad thread or odf's Antonia thread and see what kind of work and time (and tbh, talent and experience) is required for a brand new humanoid figure.

The stick figure was what I was thinking for $40.

DarksealStudios ( ) posted Sun, 24 January 2010 at 8:36 AM

I cant even imagine the time those 2 figures took.

But it is an interesting question: How much money do you think a figure like those will bring into the sellers hands in the course of 3months, 6months, a lifetime?

High quality, great rigging/ mesh density/ uv layout/ etc.etc............What do you think they stand to make off a great figure?

The amount of money made would depend on how popular the figure was, as well as some other factors.

Multiple thousands of dollars, for sure, unless the price tag is so high it scares away too many buyers.

A little perspective:  I remember Anton Kisiel saying publicly that he made over $50K from sales of Apollo Maximus, during the time he was actually for sale (now given away free).
