Subject: OT: living bridges, real life "Avatar"...

silverblade33 ( ) posted Wed, 27 January 2010 at 1:18 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 8:39 AM

Saw this on a BBC nature/science program (How the Earth Made Us)
state in India the monsoon rain is so heavy, it drops most of the annual 11 metre rainfall in three months...!! (Scotland is wet as heck and we get 1 metre by comparison)
so rope bridges rot fast
thus the local folk make bridges out of living trees!!

like a real life "Avatar", wow :)

1 METER!   Wow - we are lucky to get 10 inches per year here in San Diego.  Guess we really do live in a desert.

We had a bad storm last week - blew my fence over and there was lots of high winds and flooding - storm was only about 3 to 5 inches of rain over the 5 days.  :woot:

it's so damp here we get "freezing fogs" my absolute MOST hated weather phenomena, lol.
-4C and dense fog. Uuuugh, seeps right into yer bones like nothing else shivers.
But when it persists you get thick hoarfrost coating everything like weird looking ice/slight snowfall, spiders webs are amazing covered in it, so it looks beautiful!

Gill,
hehe yeah that would be horrendous to model ;)

As a San Diego native transplanted to Phoenix, I'd love to see 10 inches of rain.

That storm that blew down your fence only dropped 1.69" of rain here in Metro Phoenix and we ended last year over 5" low.

-4C is t-shirt weather!

-20 to -25C here at the moment depending on time of day. Climate warming where are you!

I thought I was cold but I guess I'm fine. We had +5C in the morning today and +14C at lunch time. :-)
And sunny and bright. :-)

That's a really neat looking model.  Like a bug mated with a helicopter!   Not that I need to see any bugs at the moment.  Went to make a coffee while I was watching Relocation,Relocation and almost stepped on an earwig crawling across my kitchen floor EWWWWWWWWWWWW!!

An American friend of mine was unfamiliar with the term 'freezing fog' and she asked me if we needed a knife to cut through it

Maybe not.  Most things that peoplefind hilarious these days, I find irritating or just not funny.  Not sure if it's the industry's idea of humour has changed or mine has.  Or maybe they find a formula that's good but keep repeating it?   I found the first series of Moving Wallpaper (almost) pantswettingly funny but the 2nd series was crap.....

Oh God!  'old movie from the 80's'.... they were new when I watched 'em in the 80's!!!   Mostly Mad Max style the world after the holocaust meets flesh eating zombie type stuff.  All good fun 😄
I'll ask Mr. Brooks about Caddy Shack.  There's not much he hasn't watched in bits if not whole !
