Subject: Is there an easy way to attach light to Figures and Props

After teaching myself Joomla, I just want something easy to do.  Is there an easy way to attach lights to Figures and Props.  And yes I want to attach a light a figure.

I hope someone has a tutorial or tip, or something easy.. If there's not easy way then what's the hard way?

If you want a spot light to point at a moving figure, select the light, then set "Point at" and choose the desired part of the figure. I usually use the neck or chest. Then you can move the light around or the figure around, but it will always point at the figure.

If you want a light to move in lock step with a figure, parent the light to the figure.

i remember how Bagginsbill told me to use the point function but for mroe then 6 months i forgot about this. it was such a pain to allways position the light. thank god that i saw this now.

You can create a prop that actually contains a light, such that whenever you load the prop an associated light is loaed with it, already parented.

I use this to create candles, lamps etc. which load with their light already in place.

Is it possible to parent any type of light (spotlight, infinite light, point light) or does it only work for certain type of lights?

 An infinite light cannot be parented to my knowlege (would not make much sense anyway), but spotlights and point lights can be parented.

You can parent an infinite light by changing it to a spot/point light, parenting it and then changing it back to an infinite.

This is not an answer to your question, which has already been answered by raven, but you  may find the additional info useful.

If you parent a light to a figure, then save the figure back to a figure palette the light will be saved with the figure. Lights parented to props will not be saved when you save the prop to a props palette.

The easiest way to save a light with a prop is to parent the light to the prop then parent the prop to MinFig, then save MinFig to a figure palette.

You can put a light in a pp2 (prop) file, but you have to edit it in by hand. The best way is probably to save the parented light and prop to a pz3, then copy both from the pz3, then save them as pp2. However this requires a good knowledge of Poser script.

Do I miss something usefull here?

Actually, they do have a position.  In all respects, you can say they're infinitely far away (or as near as makes no difference) but they do have global coordinates.

Let's say you have BB's environment sphere loaded with a panoramic sky texture... on that texture may be the sun, or at least a brightest part. Having an infinite light pointing in the right direction makes sense... but what if you rotate the sphere? Parenting your infinite light to the sphere so that it's always pointing from the right direction is pretty handy.

Right - parenting means translation and rotation are tracked. For an ininite light, translation is not meaningful but rotation is more than meaningful - it is everything. Just as cspear said, parenting an infinite to an EnvSphere is great - rotate the sphere, and the light rotates to match.
