Subject: Planet Formation

thefixer ( ) posted Sun, 07 February 2010 at 2:57 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 7:50 AM

Going through the manual for making a planet in Vue 8 Inf....It says I should have something called "planet_clouds" in my cloud materials, I don't seem to have this, where should it be.
The pre made scenes with planets also throws up an error in asking for these clouds so I definately don't have them.
Any ideas?

In fact they seem to have forgotten it in Vue8. I can find this file in the bitmap folder of Vue7.5 but not in Vue8.

thefixer ( ) posted Sun, 07 February 2010 at 3:45 PM

Aha, ok thanks Rutra, I'll just copy it over then, didn't think to look in there....Duhh.. LOL.

The missing files are listed in the software update page at e-on, at the bottom of the page.

thefixer ( ) posted Sun, 07 February 2010 at 3:49 PM

You mean there's more!!! LOL
I'd better go check then, see what else I'm missing...

Does this mean we have to read all the way down the page each time we get an update?

Nah, it's just the 2 planetary cloud maps that are missing from the original Vue8 download. Strange they didn't include them in an update instead of putting them at the bottom of the page, where we rarely go...

Paloth ( ) posted Sun, 07 February 2010 at 10:13 PM

I found a planetary cloud map on the Vue 8 content disc, in an example scene. There is only one map though, so I'll have to check out the two on the update page.

Does anyone have any clues on how to go about creating your own planetary cloud map? There must be some site out there carrying satellite photos of global weather patterns that you can download and turn to black and white with contrast increased so that the continents and oceans become solid black.

You don't have this on your update page?  (8 infinite)

thefixer ( ) posted Mon, 08 February 2010 at 7:23 AM

Nope...
I'm on My account, scroll down to registered products, click on software updates and all I get is the normal update page for update 48522???
Right at the bottom of the page is a list of the tickets I opened and a link to C3D, that's it...

The missing files are below the installation instructions.

I don't have a list of tickets on my update page which is weird....

Ah, I think I see your problem now. If I go to user account page I get the support tickets etc. but no missing files.....

Try this :: In the top menu, Resources>Software Updates then the Vue 8 inf link on that page.
😄

thefixer ( ) posted Mon, 08 February 2010 at 8:22 AM

LOL, yea that was it, I see them now, I wasn't going far enough in. When I got the update page for 48522 I didn't click on "get update" so didn't get to the relevant page...Well duhhhh..LOL.
It works either way if you go far enough...LOL.

Anyone know where metal-door1.jpg is when the Full Scale Destruction material is chosen?

And Dead CIty Distant Build looks for concrete_al_09.jpg also when chosen.

And... Metropolis looks for DysPavement.jpg.

Ooo. I thought I was the only one with that problem. D'oh!

I'm guessing the files are in Dead City?  Rendering something huge (for days now) and can't look inside that file for possible mats.

Whatever happened to that guy who made the scene?  He stopped using Vue?

Also, It never seemed to make any difference?!. Could be biased but those are my favourite Vue materials.

That's odd - I just  tried applying the Dead City mat, it asked for the jpg, I hit 'Cancel' but everything still loaded.  Try that??

I'm curious if the materials would look even better if the JPG's weren't missing?

gillbrooks ( ) posted Wed, 10 February 2010 at 10:18 AM

OK......so I've exported concrete_al_09.jpg from Vue 5.    Would it be copyright violation to make it available ???   OR now that I know what it's supposed to look like, I've made a texture almost the same in Filter Forge....I could definitely post that 😄

Regarding the Metropolis mat, I made my own pavement type texture and named it DysPavement.jpg so that Vue could find it.  Strangely though, the only texture image showing to be used in Metropolis is 'cruiser.gif'   ???

The mats might be pointing to null locations that still have filenames associated with them.  Vue 8 is good at removing such things when their mats are no longer needed the way they were originally created (frees up resources).  I'll look through my Vue 5 discs.  Thanks for the find.
