Subject: Valentine's Day Trivia Feb 13-14th

pointblank ( ) posted Sat, 13 February 2010 at 7:36 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 11:37 PM

Hello,
Sorry if this isn't okay to do, but I thought it would be a fun way to start the holiday for the community. Today and tomorrow (Feb 13-14th) both myself and xilia78 will post random questions related to Valentine's Day. The first to respond correctly will receive our character, Xilia for free. I will be checking back tonight and once one person answers correctly, I will post a new question (up to 3 tonight by 12AM EST).

1st Question:
In what year and by whom was the first Valentine's Day candy box invented?

Answers should be posted here so that a clear winner will be shown.

Thanks and good luck!

Searched some more and finally found a different date.
In 1861, the first box of Valentine’s Day chocolates were invented by Richard Cadbury

Actually, the father of Cupid was Mars, the Roman god of War. You can't believe everything you read on Wikipedia ;o).

Laurie

geechy72 ( ) posted Sat, 13 February 2010 at 10:38 PM

Well from reading other areas, its not clear who the father is and if you ask, depending on if you favor Greek or Romany Mythology it can be either:

Greek mythology, Eros (Cupid) is said to be the son of Aphrodite & Ares.

In Roman mythology, Cupid is said to be the son of Jupiter (Zeus) & Venus (Aphrodite).

pointblank ( ) posted Sat, 13 February 2010 at 10:53 PM

Both of you are actually correct. It's not really clear on who the father is and I was looking more for the mother. Sources vary on the father of which Ares, Zeus, and Hermes(geechy72's first answer) seem to come up. Apologies and should have been more clear but LaurieA, you have a gift as well :)

Thanks again everyone and Happy Valentine's Day :)

LaurieA ( ) posted Sun, 14 February 2010 at 12:15 AM

I wasn't looking for a gift, but thanks ;o).

I was just clarifying...lol. Greek and Roman mythology has always been kind of an interest of mine ;o).

Okay, time for today's Trivia questions.

During Medieval times, why did girls ate unusual foods on St. Valentine's Day?

ps1borg ( ) posted Sun, 14 February 2010 at 7:00 PM

It was thought that unusual (yellow coloured etc) food  would give them  dreams of their furure husband

xilia78 ( ) posted Sun, 14 February 2010 at 7:06 PM

Good job, ps1borg You are answered correctly. I will mail the links for the charecter Xilia shortly.

Next question:
In what year was February 14th, officially declared Valentine's Day?

xilia78 ( ) posted Sun, 14 February 2010 at 7:35 PM

You answered the question correctly, wyrwulf. I will sending you the information and links for the character shortly.

Okay last question:
Some people believed that if a woman saw a robin-flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it meant what?

Kendra ( ) posted Sun, 14 February 2010 at 10:39 PM

She would marry a sailor.  ;)
