Subject: OT:Over three hours to complete a download? Really??

Oh, I must be downloading Poser 8...

I finally took the plunge, but that Poser 8 content zip is killing me. The server is so slow it's unbelievable...

Gawd, I hope it wasn't that way for everyone else :o(. No wonder ppl were in a bad mood when it first came out...lol. I waited over 2 hours for it to get 85% done and then the server cut out and I lost the whole thing.... Now it says the new download is gonna take over 3 hours...sigh

Sometimes I should just stay in bed.

SM's servers are very bad, IMO.

It takes me 3 hours to get each updated beta of PPro 2010. The other day I had to get 3 versions on the same day - took 9 hours. And this is from an internal Beta server.

The problem is that the Poser team is a tiny part of Smith Micro - it is SM's general IT department that controls all public servers. They are used to cell phone app-sized downloads or something - IT doesn't seem to think this is a problem. The Poser team does, but they can't do much about it (I think).

Oh that's downright ridiculous BB...lol. 9 hours???

Well, it might help some of they broke that enormous 1.7 gig zip into smaller chunks ;o). But I'm sure they've heard all that.

Channing ( ) posted Mon, 22 February 2010 at 4:23 PM

I don't remember it being this bad.

Maybe it was. :/

Sorry to hear about this ... I think back to the early days of the internet and can only imagine a download like this lasting ... weeks? O_o

markschum ( ) posted Mon, 22 February 2010 at 6:37 PM

lol, I has dialup, a speedy 2.6 kbps download speed.
I go to the library for downloads over a meg

Channing ( ) posted Mon, 22 February 2010 at 6:49 PM

O_o

Well then I am well and truly spoiled with a quick download speed.

LaurieA ( ) posted Mon, 22 February 2010 at 7:11 PM

My goodness...I didn't think anyone had dialup anymore ;o)

Until recently I lived out in the middle of nowhere with only a broadband card and very old cell towers in the area for internet.  I was getting a blazing 6 kbs a second for downloads.   Just agony.  I'm so glad I'm back in civilization with cable internet.  hugs her internet connection

LaurieA ( ) posted Mon, 22 February 2010 at 8:49 PM

I haven't had dialup for so many years now I forget what it was like almost (and thank the gods...lol). I love my cable internet too. I'm just not that crazy about SM's servers ;o).

Finally got it downloaded though, after about 5 hours of grief ;o).

Oh I understand. I just bought Poser 8 last week.. and 3 hrs is what it told me BUT about almost 2 hrs later it timed out of me and I had to sit another 2 hrs downloading again. :)

I'm lucky enough to have a relatively fast connection at my end but it still took about 2 hours for Poser 8 to arrive. I'd suggest they look into getting a seed box for offering the download as a Torrent, at least that way if the connection does fall over in the middle of someone downloading they can carry on from where it stopped & not have to go right back to the beginning.

Yepper, there be a few of us old hold outs that still have ye olde blazing 4-5.5KBPS corridor.  However, think of the advantages;  cost, learns patience, cost, IP address changes every time one goes on line (nice security feature, no self respecting hack wants it), cost.  Jan

I remember when Poser 5 came out & people who pre-ordered the box (me) had to sit & wait while people who ordered on the day of release received their copies. Not Smith Micro I know but patience is needed from time to time & a good sense of humour helps as well.

Before you blame SMSI Servers, do a Trace Route for your connection. My Comcast flies, because of the network path, but my Verizon hangs because of two points in the Trace Route when connecting to CP... the opposite is true for connecting to DAZ and Renderosity...

If you find the issue is not in the Trace Route, contact Store Support or if in the Beta, contact the Beta Team.

Using a download manager made a considerable difference when downloading Poser 8.

By the way, have there been any updates to the Poser Pro beta? I can't seem to find any official source for such information, except maybe the blog which doesn't seem to have anything new on the subject.

*A lot more of us are on dialup then you know. Out side of and city it's impossible to get any thing else. We just seldom have the time to fill in surveys.
I dl at 10 mb per hour. An 8 or 9 hour dl is not uncommon.

mb is milli bits.

Mb is mega bits.

You guys must mean MB for mega bytes. grin

When Poser came out, and I bought it the first day,  it was not that bad at all.

I think living on the other side of the world helped LOL.

Hey be glad you could download it 2, 3 5 hours and you have it, if you ordered the boxed version, you'd have to wait for days for shipping.

For those of you living outside city limits try checking out wireless internet. It's not as fast as cable but better then dialup. I live outside the city limits of a town of maybe 600 and we are able to get that. Or if you have the money, there is always satalite (sp?) internet.

It takes about 10 working days from California to Florida.  It can go by either the Postal Service or Federal Express.  Both have several hubs that process your package.  With Federal Express you can track each portion of the route.   Jan

How true. I can get 100MB in 5 Hours on a good run but I do feel sympathy for those who have to wait 3 hr for almost 2GB. Let me just find my violin, it's so tiny it get's lost easily :-)

That's it? 3 hours only? When I bought P8 I had it downloading overnight and it still wasn't done when I woke up in the morning. 3 hours is pretty good for CP's servers.

It was three hours the first time before the server cut out before the file was complete...almost 3 hours the second time ;o).

I think your question was somehow overlooked....

There was a huge, ultimately pointless discussion about this a few days ago, in another thread.

The Poser Pro 2010 Beta updates coming from the development team are only available to the official Beta Testers. SM are quite rightly not wasting time (theirs and ours) packaging these up for participants in the Beta User programme.
