Subject: New Vue 8.4 Update

Paula Sanders ( ) posted Mon, 22 February 2010 at 2:28 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 4:45 AM

There is a new Vue 8.4 update[

http://www.e-onsoftware.com/resources/index.php?page=updates](http://www.e-onsoftware.com/resources/index.php?page=updates)

What's New in Vue 8.4?

The new Vue 8.4 update adds the following new functionality to Vue 8:

  • Improved Displacement Mapping: computation and rendering of displaced materials on standard terrains is significantly faster and more memory efficient.
  • Multi-Materials: new Multi-materials allow you to change all materials of any given object in a single operation. Multi-materials can be saved for future use, copy-pasted or drag-dropped between different objects in the scene.
  • New Material Control: new "Relative to sea" material mapping option, and "Sea level" input node.
  • User-definable units in Function Graphs: "External Dependency", "Distance to object below", "Distance from camera", and other position-related nodes now express object dimensions in user-definable real-world units.
  • Easier Pose/Motion Handling: the new Motion Browser lets you visually select and interactively preview preset poses and motions for rigged meshes.
  • EcoSystem Display Improvements: the rendering of shaded EcoSystem billboards is improved to provide more accurate coloring and reduce flickering when moving around the scene.
  • Other Artistic Control Improvements: the render area and the collections browser can be locked to avoid accidental modifications, materials mapped in World coordinates are now accurately previewed in OpenGL, GPU resources can be easily monitored in the status bar, objects can be copy-pasted to hidden or locked layers, and more...
  • Other Performance Improvements: faster high quality previewing in OpenGL, automatic resizing of render buckets to maximize use of all cores on small renders, faster handling of complicated group hierarchies, default views are automatically resized to adjust according to internal units, and more...

According to the newsletter I got today.

"The Vue 8.4 update for the Vue product line for 3D Artists will be released in English later in the week, and in German and French shortly thereafter."

I'll wait and see if people report that this upgrade breaks anything crucial. Vue has been performing adequately, and I've been working in Corel Painter X lately so I feel no urgency to upgrade. The improved displacement sounds tempting though.

I have run it on my Win7 64, no problems so far. I am a little bit disappointed about the few new features.  What can we expect with the 8.5 Update?

Everyone has their own opinion, but for me, I would MUCH rather see fewer or no new features added and focus on bug fixes, improvements and stability of what's already there now.

I have a rock-stable system and Vue run very fine on it. I build my systems myself since many years. I have an very talented IT person as friend who gives me many tips what configuration work and what not. I read here sometimes amused, sometimes feared about your problems with Vue I (almost) never had. :blushing:

I don't think it's just the way you configure your system, but what you try to do.  some of us push the software harder eg trying to load a very large PZ3 and then add a few ecos or something.

Possible problem here, can someone else try it.
Load a terrain and use an eco system, any will do. Then load an Aplha plane and put whatever picture you want on it and set it as a bill board....What do you get?

I get a billboard with an eco system on it, the picture I put on the Alpha plane can be seen in the material editor as a mapped picture, but my Alpha plane doesn't show the picture, just the eco????
My Alpha planes were working until I put the update in, can someone try it or have I missed something here and having a blond moment...[no offence to blonds, LOL]

Hey I resemble that remark

No such problem here. Just tried it with pastures eco and put my pic on an alpha plane and it all worked properly. No ecosystem on the alphaplane at all either in render or checking the material editor

thefixer ( ) posted Tue, 23 February 2010 at 11:04 AM

OK, try it with a terrainscape material on your terrain, then do the Alpha plane, what do you get now.

Reason I ask is, normal landscape material and the Alpha is how it should be, use the trrrainscpae then the Alpha plane and I get an Alpha plane with terrainscape on it....!!
[Rockyfield]
If I do the plane first, then the terrain it's not an issue, but I would normally do the terrain first...

A-Spot ( ) posted Tue, 23 February 2010 at 11:17 AM

thefixer, I have no idea if this will work, or if it will even do anything, but after doing the terrain, try placing a cube, load in the basic texture (Rocks > Basic), then delete the cube and set up the alpha plane. I'm quite a noob, honestly, but that would be my best guess, and if it works, there's no reason to keep it to myself.

Good luck ...

Thomas

*What did you expect?

*What I already said, your image is what I would normally get, what I am actually getting is the Alpha plane with the same material as the terrainscape, even though I have loaded the Alpha images correctly onto the plane, I'm not new to the software or how to use it...

This is what I get in the material editor for the alpha plane, tha alpha plane from the menu is set up correctly, I do know how to use them, I have used them many times. You can see the figure is there but doesn't appear in the plane, why are those grass and rocks there?

I raised a ticket and it's been sorted, here it is for anyone else that might fall into the same silly problem.
When updating from 8 to 8.4 it changed the preferences I'd set previously, I confess I didn't think to check that..Duhhh!
One little tick that wasn't ticked before was all that was needed...LOL

I must say, I've always found e-on quick to respond to queries, this was less than 2 hours, can't complain about that!!

Anyway, drama over....

Hey There,

Just wondering if anyone else is having a problem with Vue 8.4 and the rendercows (rendering animations)... i seem to be able to update them. but they crash as soon as hypervue trys to communicate with them.

So far so good here.
For me this is shaping up to be one of the better updates in a while. Seems to have improved speed and reduced resources.

Time will tell, but so far I'm very happy with this update.

James

TBH it's not the first time an update has changed my settings, I should have known that and checked it first...

Seriously, now I've unticked it to be like it was before, I don't have a problem, if your's is ticked you should have had the same thing as I was getting.....[shrug]

Actually, I think you may be right.  I just rechecked to make sure the box was ticked, applied a mat and added some trees for an ecosystem, populated.   Then loaded a new terrain but it loaded with the default creamy white.    Clicked back to the original terrain and then loaded another andstill just the default.

But how can it be a bug if it's only happening in MY Vue ??

My brain cell is hurting now.

Precisely why I am in no hurry to upgrade. I may not be keeping up with the Smiths and the Joneses but my Vue 7 Infinite is chugging along just fine  : ) (knocks on wood).
