Subject: Poser 8 - Library AND Material Room extremely slow...

Vestmann ( ) posted Fri, 26 February 2010 at 6:23 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 7:17 PM

It finally happened.  P8 is turning against me.  It now takes forever to load anything from the library and the material room is so slow I can't use it.   The library loads up fine.  When I try to add anything to a scene it takes forever.  Does anyone know what might be causing this?

I´m running P8 SR2.1 on Vista 64.  I've tried deleting the prefs. and I also tried to free up some disk space (I have 50+ gigs free).   I don't let Windows update itself without my permission and I haven't updated for a while.

This is driving me crazy so any suggestions are well appreciated.

Ask Noelcan. snicker

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Hehe, you're evil :)  I've read some of the library connected threads but none of them had problems with the material room as well.  Any ideas?  I've reached the point of doing a clean install to see if that changes anything...

No I have not had any problem with the Material Room  (That is until I started using VSS...  ;o)))))

But then I am working with Mac..!

What works for Me  (Currently.  Who knows what will happen with P8  ten seconds from now..??)
Is to ensure that as many library folders as possible are closed.    I have even gone to the extreme of removing superfluos Runtime folders from the library..

And also,  as it has been suggested in other threads.   I am running My browser on a second (laptop)  machine,   This is not really  showing any significant improvement in speed though..!

The library works pretty fast for me.  It loads all the folders and such.  It's only when I load something into the scene that things become very slow.

Maybe just reorganising your folders..?   IMO there is too much use of external software in P8..!

Noel you're once again not reading what he's saying.

The library itself is very fast for him. It is POSER that is slow, when he uses the library to load something.

This has nothing to do with the library.

When was the last time you defragmented? & have you got the latest video drivers?

Windows 7 64Bit

bb.....          What is the Title on this thread?

Doesn't matter what he put in the title. Read the post.

Sorry NoelCan but once again bagginsbill is right ;) but I guess I could have made the title more precise.  I just don't like long winded titles :)

@ Lucifer_The_Dark, Defragmented...?   erm...  I haven't done that in a loooooong time.  Possibly even...     never ? (blush).   I'm one of those impatient Poser users (see bagginsbill post somewhere) and defragmenting just takes soooo  long.  My system is a few years old and I´m in the process of putting in a new hard drive and possibly installing Win 7.  When that's done I'll be formatting my old drives.  I guess I was hoping this problem was caused by something else then my own neglect (hangs head in shame).  I just updated my video drivers and that didn't change anything...

I wouldn't rely on Microsoft's native defragmentation software.  Executive's diskeeper works much better and takes shorter time if you perform the task frequently.

Vestmann ( ) posted Sat, 27 February 2010 at 10:05 AM

Please disregard my last post!   I went to defrag my drives and found out I had Disk Defragmenter scheduled to defragment my drives once a week.  Of Course!! ;)

Hmm hborre, you snuck in there while I was writing.  I was also skeptic of the native defragmenter so I ran an analysis with the one I have in TuneUp Utilities 2009.   Result: I should drefragment my drive.  I´m doing that now.

This is probably a problem with my system since re-installing Poser didn't change a thing.
