Subject: Game animations

Hi, sorry if this has been posted before, I'm new to this forum and looked back several pages but could not find a related topic...

We're working on a low budget shareware game that we intend to sell, we're wanting to make simple bitmap animations like this (2d sprites, on action at a time):

A few questions:

  1. Can we use animations like this created from Poser in our game using stock or bought models? we wouldn't be using the actual models or textures, but a series of bitmap animations like above?

  2. Would Poser be the ideal software package for something like this or would you recommend something else? What about Daz 3d, LIghtwave or Blender?

  3. Where is a good place to buy Poser? Would you recommend v7 or 8?

  4. How long would it take an experienced user to create an animation like this using stock models?

  5. Where would you recommend buying models + accessories that could be used in low budget game development?

I think a lot of professional houses use applications like 3dmax or maya and build models from scratch, we obviously don't have the budget nor the ambition to create such sophisticated animations.

Any help or advice relating to these questions would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks,

Vanz

  1. Yes you can create animations to use in a game.
2.You could try Daz3d first. There is a free version.
  2. For simple animations I would go with Poser 7 since its much cheaper. Checck Smith Micro, Content Paradise or search the internet and see who has good prices.
  3. Once you get a bit of practise posing you can probably do one an hour, maybe more if the action is simple. That would include rendering a few seconds of animation.
  4. Depends on what settings , clothes you want.  Daz3d and Renderosity , maybe runtimedna.
You can put together a list and price stuff, then look at DAZ Plantinum club and see what that savess you.
  • theres a lot of free stuff but you would need to make sure it allows commercial use.

Obviously compare the features in Poser 7, 8 and Pro and see if there is anything you might need. I suspect Poser 7 will do what you want though. or even Daz Studio.

Read the license agreements for Poser and Daz content. Its pretty clear that any IMAGES you make are your to use as you please. If you waanted to put the obj file into a game engine then thats quite different.

Your welcome ... and not the first game maker to ask :)

Good luck with your project.

  1. Yes
  2. Poser is a PITA to learn, but it should do the job
  3. Amazon
  4. dunno
  5. Daz3D, renderosity, maybe RuntimeDNA.  Depending on  how low your budget is you could probably make the clothing and accessories yourself.

WARK!

Don't do it. I got poser for that reason years ago. Game development stopped and a new hobby came about. I keep meaning to get back to it. BTW they're are a few tutorials about on how to do just what your trying to do, read them years ago.

I'm sorry I don't remember where I saw them, I think at DAZ. I do remember using Orthographic camera, and I think isometric set up.
