Subject: Question rendering a one-sided square in poser. Show texture one side transparen

Question on rendering a one-sided square in Poser.

If you apply a texture to a one-sided square, in the pose room, one side will show the texture, the other side will be invisible. Depending on which side of the square is facing the camera.

Now when you render the square, It does not matter which side of the square is facing the camera, the texture gets rendered. Normal looking one way, mirrored the other. Depending of course which side of the square is facing the camera.

Is there anyway to render a one-sided prop in Poser, and have one side show the texture, and have the other side be invisible like in the pose room.

Geep:

Got a problem. The above does not work unless I turn cast shadows off in the render settings menu. The Poser manual says that you can keep cast shadows on, and then uncheck the cast shadows box in the figure, and/or props properties menu, to overide settings, etc. Tried that, and did not work. Changed both light, and camera angles as well.

Last pic. I'd like to have shadows, etc. So I wonder what's going on. I'm using Poser 8

Hi Albert,

I get the same results that you show here using the same settings.

Either ... the manual is not correct ...
... or ...
... this is a "bug" that has not been fixed yet.

The only thing that I can suggest is that you contact Smith Micro Technical Support and report what you have found.

Sorry I can not help.

Thanks much. I'll let SM know what's going on. I want to try Poser 2010, and see what happens. If anything I can allways render out the prop without shadows on, etc. Then make up a scene with all my figures, and such. Render that out, and combine the 2 in Photoshop. Not the way I would like to go but....

Dr Geep:

Solved the problem!!!.

When rendering a one sided square, and to show a texture on one side, and to be transparent on the other side three things have to be done:

1)  Remove backfacing polygons must be checked in the render settings menu.
2)  Every light in the scene has to have ray traced shadows checked in their properties menu.
3)  Have to have raytracing turned on when rendering.

or

1)  Remove backfacing polygons must be checked in the render settings menu
2)  Every light in the scene has to have depth map shadows checked in their properties menu.
3)  Have to have raytracing turned off when rendering.

If you have raytracing turned on, and have depth mapped shadows checked in the lights properties menu, Poser does not render stuff right. Same for raytracing turned off, and ray traced shadows checked in the lights properties menu. Nothing like taking 2 hours to track down the problem.
