Subject: Infrared (IR) Photography Thread

I really like the fact that it doesn't immediately look like an IR photo! :)

HI All
Glad to see this thread back!! Anyway to fill everyone in I managed to get a SONY DSCF828 IR capable camera and have been playing with it recently, so I thought I would give people a basic workflow, which is proving quite successful for me at the moment.

Import RAW (use RAW Wb dropper to set balance point)
Increase contrast slider and exposure slider.

Go to channel mixer and use these settings

Red channel

R 0
G 0
B 100

Green channel

R 50
G 0
B 50

Blue Channel

R 100
G 0
B 0

This should produce a fairly flat image, use CTRL+M to open curves, pull the curve to get a slight S shape, Apply this.

Use CTRL+L to get levels.

And done, I would recommend playing round and seeing how things go, but for the newbies this should help take some of the mystique out of using photoshop to edit IR.

Thought I'd toot my own horn just a little bit...

Came in first place over on DPS in one of the weekly competitions with an IR shot. I go by a different moniker on that site,(Evn1ngStar)

I'm pretty chuffed about it

Well, this is my first post in this thread and I'm just so happy to find an I.R. thread here.

I've become acquainted with I.R. photography a couple years back when a speaker in one of the portrait photography seminar I attended took a coupl sample shots of the model and they looked amazing.  I couldn't believe the effects in the eyes... almost reminded me of all those X-Files episodes with the black oil.

So I started doing I.R. with my old Powershot A80 with a Cokin A007 filter.  I had tried with my Digital Rebel XTi, but the hot filter was better than on the A80 making long shutter speed even longer.

Since then, I have purchased a pre-modded Powershot G5 from Ebay and the rest, as they say, is history.

Here is a shot I took last week during a photoshoot. Note that she's a redhead and that her dress was black with red & green cherries.

Wonderful. Welcome Biquet, it is always good to have another IR enthusiast in the club. This is lovely work, and your gear sounds well suited for this kind of photography. I always marvel at how IR changes the look of things -- like her eyes and the black dress to white. :)

Here's another shot I took with my modified Powershot G5 recently.

The autofocus works great with studio flash our outdoors during a sunny day, but it is not so good indoors.  I guess the sensor may be a bit tired.

I'm debating having my old Digital Rebel XTi modified at lifepixel but it is still very expensive.

Funny, I've never had a focusing issue on my modded cams. Perhaps there isn't enough IR light inside for it to focus easily. Great shot here too -- luv the eyes! :)

SapUS59,  was that picture taken at Expo 67 in Montreal ?  This awfully looks like the France exhibit.

Wow, almost 2 years since someone posted to this thread. I thought I'd resurrect it in case anyone new to Rendo had any questions. I've posted some articles on another site that recap much of what has been discussed here, though perhaps a bit more condensed. Here's a link to them if anyone is interested.

Hi Kort,

Glad to hear from you! It has been a while since I've visited here too. Good to see you're still keeping a finger in the pie, so to speak  : )
