Subject: Poser Physics

I am thinking of buying Poser Physics.  I will only do this if it will work with Poser Pro 2010.  Can anyone provide any information along these lines?

Marque ( ) posted Wed, 14 April 2010 at 10:06 AM

Loaded it in 2010 and ran it on a default poser 7 character and it worked. Have not played with it for a long time but will probably mess with it more now. Be sure to follow the instructions on using it.

Thalek ( ) posted Mon, 02 May 2011 at 2:57 AM

I must have an older copy of Poser Physics, or perhaps it doesn't like my Windows 7 OS very much, as I can't seem to get it to work with Pro 2010.

(Sorry for resurrecting the dead, but I'm desperate to learn if there's an upgrade that will work with Poser 8 and Pro 2010 . . . and how to get it.)

Wolf359  noted that RAVEN found a fix to make it work in P8 or Pro 2010 in the thread at this link

Thanks, Stallion.

Actually, I read that thread yesterday.  Raven found a way to make M4 and V4 work with Poser Physics, not a way to make Poser Physics work with Pro 2010.  While important to know and remember (I'll have to make similar mods to my own V4 and M4), it isn't quite what I need.

I do thank you for the effort, though; it's very much appreciated.

Could you do something like this with Poser Physics? It started as a single S spline object then a grid replication then Physics in Carrara 7.

Would it be possible to do with Poser Physics in Poser Pro 2010? Thanks

As you see some are still intersecting.

I don't know much about Poser Physics, but if any of the objects are still touching, Poser Physics will force them apart, I know that much.

As for doing it in Poser Pro 2010, that is my quest, too.  I will have to write to the Smith Micro people to find out if there is a version that will work in Pro 2010, and then decide if I'm willing to spend another $50 to buy it.  Everything I've heard indicates that there is no upgrade path for items bought from the old Content Paradise store, and that's where I bought mine, of course.  [bitter smile]

I'll report back here if I learn anything.

Thanks I hope it is good news. I'll be waiting.

Here's the answer from SmithMicro:

By the way it works on Mac Poser Pro 2010

You got a faster response than I did.  I sent an email to their Tech support and haven't received an answer yet.  Judging by what you've learned, the newest version of Poser Physics works in Pro 2010.

I have an older version, so I will have to consider updating.  Which will likely cost me $50 to do.

Thanks, Uncle808us; it's greatly appreciated!

No problem yep $50.00 good luck to ya. No problems here. Plus the installer loads to 7 8 and pro.

I still haven't received an answer from them.  May I ask how you contacted them?  Your contact seems more responsive than their technical support contact.

raven ( ) posted Thu, 05 May 2011 at 2:10 PM

I just looked through my old CP order history and there was an update to PoserPhysics to make it compatible with P7 around June 2007, it was a free update for previous PoserPyhsics owners.

Thalek ( ) posted Thu, 05 May 2011 at 6:22 PM

I appear to have that update.  But I get error messages when I try to run it with Poser Pro 2010.

You know I can't remember, had to fill out a lot of questions: App, platform etc.

Thalek - what is the specific error you are getting?

It's a pleasure to meet you, sir.

Error message from the script run from the scripts menu is:

Traceback (most recent call last):
*  File "C:Program FilesSmith MicroPoser Pro 2010RuntimePythonposerScriptsScriptsMenuPoserPhysicsPoserPhysics.py", line 13, in ?*
*    import PhysicsToolsP7*
*  File "C:Program Filese frontierPoser 7RuntimePythonlibPhysicsToolsP7.py", line 25, in ?*
ImportError: DLL load failed with error code 193

I'm on a PC, running on Windows 7.  Poser 7, on the same machine, runs the initial script without error.

nruddock ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2011 at 1:20 PM

One reason you might get that error is if you're trying to use it with the 64-bit version.

If you installed the 32-bit version of PPro2010 try with that, otherwise it means the DLL being loaded is corrupt.

Thalek ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2011 at 1:55 PM

Ah!  Yes, I'm using it with the 64 bit version of Poser Pro 2010.

Hmmm.  That doesn't seem to have worked:  I get the same error message in the x86 version.

Thalek ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2011 at 2:02 PM

My mistake:  I only glanced over the error message.

It said there was a module missing.

I installed PoserPhysics into the 32 bit directory, and it appears to be working now.

Poser 6 for MetaForm, PPro 2010 x86 for PoserPhysics.  Got it.  At least I can then save out the results as a scene file and import it into my preferred program, but it complicates the workflow.  :-(

I suspect your only hope is to pester SM to compile a 64-bit compatible version and release it as an update.

Thalek ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2011 at 5:39 PM

I've started that process.

Is re-compiling it for 64 bits a trivial or a non-trivial exercise?

face_off ( ) posted Sat, 14 May 2011 at 6:59 PM

Non-trival - however 64but is the future so it's something I need to look into.

In this case, I suspect it might be towards the easier end of the scale, provided the underlying ODE library code doesn't present problems (any glue code between that library and Poser ought not to be problematic, but as that's proprietary I've no way to assess).

An update on this....

Recompiling under 64 bits for Poser Pro and Poser Pro 2010 is being worked on, but quite non-trival, and may or may not even be possible.

I understand that Poser releases in the future may use a later version of Python which will mean there will certainly be 64 bit version of PoserPhysics available for those versions.

Follow the above link for details.

Thanks for the update; it's greatly appreciated.  It seems that Poser Pro 2010 x 32 and Poser Pro x64 have some issues with playing together nicely on the same machine, from the little I've experimented with it.
