Subject: Efficiency tip: face textures

When doing a scene with multiple characters, I find that the massive resolution in the face textures can slow me down a lot. I found a way to work around that with the help of Bagginsbill's VSS.

For figures that are faceroom compatible: Open each face in the face room, import the original face texture, make adjustments to the texture if you wish (I normally darken around the eyes a little unless the texture includes makeup). Apply and save the texture as 512x512 pixels. Load a VSS prop into the scene and synchronise.  You probably need to turn down the lighting quite a lot. Now render. You will be surprised how good the faces look in spite of the low-res textures.

For non-faceroom compatible figures, you can resample the face texture in a graphics program to 512x512 and apply in the material room.

Faces that will be viewed in close-up can be left at their original resolution.

Yes, we've been doing this for years. I would suggest resizing the  the whole texture set. You would save even more on resources. I always down size all my texture sets to an average of 1024. 512 depending what the texture is for.

Those big texture sizes are only good for closeup work. Otherwise they are needless overkill.

There is even a script or app that can batch convert the MAT files to point to the smaller files. I can't remember who did it. I do it all by hand in a text editor for the time it takes. Also many paint apps can batch the convertion of the textures. so it does not take as much time.

I did the downsizing of textures before, but it is fiddly and there was some loss of quality. I was using Poser Pro then, so the loss of quality should not be surprising. I am impressed with the way VSS compensates for the downsizing so that in most cases you get a result that is even better than the full size texture without VSS.

The detail is from turning off texture filtering. VSS is doing that for you, but you could have done the same. FYI.

It baffles me. I don't understand what texture filtering does. Is there any situation where it is needed? I always seem to be turning it off.
