Subject: New user, creating road.

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to create a road using Vue 8 PLE. To keep this as simple as possible, I just want a flat plane road on the ground plane. I have inserted a plane and applied a road texture but am looking for a way to control the road (or terrain beneath) variables (ie height, position).

Is it possible to import a function that defines the road into Vue? I believe one way would be to "paint" the road onto the terrain, but I need a road with very specific dimensions and direction.

Thanks

I have a tutorial at Cornucopia3D that might help you (see link, it's the one "Making of Sic Transit"). I talk about several different techniques.

Anyway, having a road on the ground plane as you plan is the most difficult way of doing it... The ground plane is too big and difficult to control. You're much better off with a small plane or a terrain.

There's also a recent similar thread in this forum (check it out) with a similar question.

Hope that helps.

Yes, that's one of the grass types (grass collection 1). One word of warning regarding the usage of this pack:

Some of the materials have a sum higher than 100% in the diffuse and ambient components (under the Effects tab). Normally, the sum should be 100% for a "normal" material. When the sum is higher than 100%, you can get a washed out effect in certain light conditions (namely if the general ambient light is very high).
In practice, whenever I use that grass collection, I almost always lower the diffuse and ambient components to match the specific lighting of my scene.

Another word of advise regarding the usage of this pack: probably because of its fairly high polycount (when compared to other grass packages), it renders fairly slow. The good side of this is that it looks great on close ups (as you can see in several of my renders). The down side is that if you cover a whole terrain with it, you'll have big render times. In practice, I many times mix this grass with other packages, because of this.

Anyway, this is a great package and I use it a lot. Many thanks to Lars "bigbraader" for it. :-)

:) Great to know. Thank you for the tips.  Do you have a favorite faster grass?  And I can't seem to find any twigs.

Rutra ( ) posted Thu, 06 May 2010 at 2:47 AM

I don't have one favorite "faster grass". Bigbraader's grass is my favorite grass, the one I use the most often. Complementary, sometimes I use Willi's grass (from C3D), sometimes I use AsileFX groundcover package (not their grass package, that's very slow to render), sometimes I use Linda's grass (Lush collection, in C3D).

Regarding twigs in my images, those I made myself. It's just some twisted thin cylinders, textured with a flat brown material. I modelled them in zbrush but they could be easily done with booleans in Vue.

I found a mention in another thread of an eco grass here and it looks pretty nice also.

oooo insta twisty twiggy tool kit time!
