One of my very favorite fantasy artist.  He shall be missed.

Sad news indeed!

RIP and Thank you Frank for the inspiration of your art.

His influence on comic books, fantasy art and film was phenomenal, and he was a true visionary; he inspired too many to list, including many of us in this community.

Especially if you grew up in the 60's-70's where his art was everywhere.

A sad day indeed.

Such sad news.  Long will he be remembered by fans and admirers all over the world!

I picked up a litho at a sci-fi con back in 76 which I got him to sign. Practically begged him to. It is still one of my most prized possessions sitting framed on the living room wall. His art was and is a great inspiration to me. His book covers got me reading all the Edgar Rice Burroughs stuff I could find. Back when a paperback was still 50 or 75 cents. This is sad news indeed. It takes a great artist to produce the kind of work he did even after his stroke a number of years back. R.I.P. Frank. Thank you.

Somehow i see him going out sword in hand, like so many of his artworks, he was such a great inspiration and from what ive read a good guy. Hunt well brother, whereever you land.

One of my favorite Frank Frazetta stories is a publisher required to be able  to keep his original art so Frank requested to take it back to the studio for some touch ups and whipped together another version of the painting and gave that one to the publisher!

My heart is filled with sorrow. Everyone else has said it all and said it better. Frank, your artwork was the beginning of almost everything with me. Goodbye...

This is indeed a sad day.

This is a sad sad day for the art world. We are all poorer in his passing.

My best wishes go to his family.

"If you can draw an egg, YOU can DO this! I will show you how!"

Those words from a $4.00 "How To Draw" book, along with seeing many works of his on paperback and comic covers, stirred that excitement in a 14 year old boy a long time ago.
Neither that man or that boy lost that excitement in all the following years. One of them had tremendous artistic talent and training, the other had desire and will, but little else.
That boy was like so many other people. All fired up, grabs up pencil and paper, and scribbles their way to the joy of creating something from their own self. Yes, joy. At being creative. No matter how poor the work, it was joy to know "I Did It!"
That boy became you, me, him, her and all them over there...creating their own works, inspired and motivated, confident that they CAN!

Frank Frazetta, I thank you for all you have given us. Given ME. I believe the best way to show my appreciation is to use what I've been given in creating my own Art.

I may not be good at it, but I never will be if I don't DO it!

Sleep well old man. We'll be along soon.

 Like many people, I have been inspired by his work. Tried my best to learn from him and still find myself in awe of his sense of color and proportion. I thank him for how he unintentionally influenced us while just doing his thing. 

I'm sad to hear that he is gone.

In an illustration class I had years - decades - ago the teacher was talking about balance and by way of demonstration he had several Frazetta prints and he challenged us to turn them every which way, left, right, upside down, etc., and find something out of balance.  I still do that today, but stopped with the Frazetta ones long ago.  He singlehandedly reinvigorated my adult appreciation of 2 childhood favorites, REH and ERB.

Just the other night, I picked up an old (okay, 1970's) sci-fi / fantasy art book, sat back, and enjoyed the hell out of it. Mr. Frazetta was well represented, as was a cavalcade of artists of that era - most of the works were from book and magazine covers, but many more were made just for the hell of it.

While yeah, this little corner of the world tends to try to pay homage to the genre (and, sorry, often fails miserably), the whole explosion of art back then is something that I miss terribly, and wish would come back. This news just makes that loss just a little more real. :(

 Yeah Larry F. I had a similar class. At a time when a lot of illustration used flat colors I was dazzled by his old school painting style. I (like a lot of college students, I guess) taught myself to paint by trying to recreate some of my favortie paintings of his. 

Holding the picture up to a mirror was one of those visual tricks we used to break our mental image from the painting so we could see how the balance was really working. Good trick.

Frazetta wasn't just about the paint, although that was his delivery system, I thought he really packed a lot of story-telling into every aspect of his characters, another talent I admire.

I'm glad he has been so well remembered and his passing has not gone unnoticed.

Folks, this type of art, Fantastical Art, as Frank often named it isn't "New" any more.  The world has been exposed well to this 'new' genre.   If WE are the creators of art in this genre then isn't it up to US to keep it fresh and alive?   I am still as excited by it as I was as a teen.  Maybe at 55, that's saying something. 
So, outside of your/our own circles, WHO have you shown any of this art to?    Got any prints hanging on your walls?   :)

 I've certainly been tempted to post my ancient attempts to reverse-engineer Frank's paintings. Mostly to show how great his paintings are, not mine (as they would clearly prove) ; )

But there have been enough people  ahead of me doing that already. 

I met Boris, once, many years ago. A new guy on the illustration scene, I was a bit rankled that he would so clearly step on Frank's territory. But he was just trying to do what many of us wanted; to carry the torch into the next generation. 

Whether its new to us or not, there are always new people and they like the feeling that the subject is newly discovered/invented even if it is only being experienced by themselves. 

At least, that's always been true for me and I'm just like other people. : )

There are literally dozens of GREAT Fantasy artists.  Frank, Vallejo, Royo, San Julian, Kelly, Cleavanger, Achillios, Brom, Giger, Bell are just a very few who I've seen and collected stuff from.  Trading cards, magazines, calendars, paperbacks.  Yeah, I know lots of the work is labeled "Illustration".  Bah.  All these artists and dozens more are creative artists.  That they sell work and make a living at it means they are successful, IMHO.   To me, it's fine art. 
Frank didn't mind a bit there are plenty of artists succeeding in what we often think of as his territory.  He welcomed their work, he loved it. 
So do I!   

Hey, perhaps someday someone will be tickled to have a "McGrandpa" original hanging on their wall!    Cool.  :biggrin:

 It doesn't have to be about the world growing darker or sadder. The world is better for his contributions to it. Frank lived an amazing life and left behind more to inspire and motivate us that most people who will shift off this mortal coil. This is not including all the people he inspired who are now also working professionally in the comic and fantasy art world providing more great art for us to love.

Frazetta's poses and figures should be a subject of diligent study by Poser artists, in my view. He was the master of posing.

 I was in HIgh School when the first Fantastic Art of Frank Frazetta book came out.  I took it to art class and showed it to my teacher.  She freaked out when she saw those paintings.  Funny, Franks's art had that effect on a lot of people.

I don't have a ton of money, but I have a print of Franks "Self Portrait" and "Barbarian" on the wall in my studio next to my drafting table. I also have Book 1, 3 and 4, published and bought back in the 70s,early 80s, that are prized possessions. As well as every Conan book with his art on it and a couple of his comic books (still in plastic). At 47 I am still a struggling artist.
Not a day goes by that I don't think of Frank and that very first time and day I saw his art, of which I bought the coffee table book right then and there and still have.
I think that now, 30 years later, I am even MORE excited when I look at his work due to all the inspiration he has given me. I owe him a lot. He changed my life back then and sent me on a totally different path. He actually GAVE me a path.
There is a huge hole in both my heart and my soul right now, even though I never had the fortune of meeting him. He is my mentor and I can't stop hurting. I can't even say how many people I've told and shown or tried to explain a Frazetta print to over the years. I always get so amped when talking about him. I didn't know Gods could die.
I honestly hope that I will, someday, at least be able to visit his museum and revere his original work in person. (Maybe the family will continue with their plans to tour his work around the country and come visit us here in Seattle. )

Goodbye Frank Frazetta.We love you. You will be missed more than you even know.
