Subject: Why can't e-on get Vue to render as fast as it's preview window ?

is it not related to the size of the preview thats quite small?

I'm sure you can.  Set the render quality to "preview" and drag every quality slider you can find to -8 or so and you should pretty much get the same thing at the same speed.

 I agree...but at the beginning of this video, the guy explains a few things you can do to tweak your render time for previewing, kinda cool...
