Hello everyone!

My friend is currently over in Japan, and Super Dolfie's (A rediculously complicated doll) is huge over there.  He asked me if I could do a 3D render of a Dollfie for a collegue of his!

So, the first thing is getting Aiko's skin to look like Powder Coated Latex.  I have modified VSS and come up with the image you see here, but the skin is still too "hard". I know thats the hardest part about doing skin in Poser, but BagginsBill made huge strides with VSS.

Does anyone (or even BB himself) have any ideas how to improve this shader?

The Skin texture I am using here is a filtered Aiko skin, to smooth out the colors.  There is no bump map, instead I have applied a uniform spots/noise combination on a very low level, as Dollfie's skin is not that detailed.  The VSS color is a deep brown skin tone, as close to dark Latex as I could get.  I attempted to introduce a Velvet node into the shader to improve the look, and I think it worked.

It is still quite a bit off tho.  here is a picture of a dolfie seamless body before powder coating.  Powder Coating just adds makeup and fingernails really ;)

If you are using VSS, decrease your bump settings to eliminate the fine details.  Also, take a look at your Shine settings, levels and spread.  You may need to modify your SSS node and change the color tint there.  That will go hand in hand if you want to match the deep brown to the skin texture.  Unfortunately, BB is currently on vacation and may try to access the internet.  But don't count on it.

Following with interest... my only suggestion would be some soft and wide specular highlights to give the sheen.

Nice looking dolffie skin. But I'd advise you to use Maya's Ball Joint Doll. It IS a Dollfie in 3D :) (well a BJD at least, Dollfies are often made of vinyl while proper BJDs are made of Resin.

And they're not complicated L Just ..er.. expensive ;)

Good part is.. they can be customized

If you want pics of BJD's.. I have.. er.. quite a few

Okay, you made your point... I call that complicated!

Is that an actual physical model?
If so, gotta go find one!

I would have plugged the Spot node directly into the PM: Bump @ Value_1.  Texture color can be changed @ PMC: Color Tint or simple color with the Velvet node connected.  The reasoning for that arrangement if you use Parmatic, you can make adjustments quicker.

I still think you should play with the shine nodes.

That doll armature reminds me of the intro of the film Ghost in the Shell.

The changes you have made are kind of confusing. Got a better screenshot?

Templargfx... O.o Wooow that is some serious BJD! Where's it from? What does the SFBT stand for?

That said, there's something like too much of a good thing. My faourite BJDs are the Pukis, awesome little things, only 11 cm tall and capable of the most amazing posing. They're also wonderfully posable. They're the three smallest ones on my picture. And yes, I even made a Puki into a Snape ROFL

Point is, resin has some very interesting light-bending capabilities. It's semitransparent the way skin or wax is... so I think I'd actually take BB's wax shader and work from that to get a proper resin shine :)

Trekkie, now that's a thought. Take his shader for a white candle and mess with some of the settings on that and apply it to the VSS prop Skin Template.

Latexluv ( ) posted Sat, 22 May 2010 at 6:42 PM

RuntimeDNA, in the Node Cult, BB had a thread about Candles. Somewhere in the discussion thread, he released a Matmatic script for various types of candle wax.

This is actually the Dolfie I was most impressed with, its not an SFBT, but its got a full body latex skin, and actually looks quite realisticly proportioned!

SFBT1 stands for Special Fullaction Body Type 1. Check the link for the official web site (in japanese, but its got pics)

The idea with the wax shader is a good one. I'll have a play with that today!

Hey, thanks, I'll have a look! I've got some nice result here with using the IDL VSS prop and plugging in a toon into the simple color, and making the toon colors very light shades of flesh. I saved the prop. It does enhance light skin types.

I have two Volks super dollfies from Japan, and one Obitsu, to date.

The Dollfie Dream series are latex skinned with internal joint system. Obitsu dolls are also this type of material, but have articulated posing joints.

The Super Dollifes are Ball-Joint Dolls, strung internally with elastic;  their bodies are cast from polyurethane resin with UV protection.

So, depending on the surface look you wish to achieve, you could be looking at more than one type of Dollfie.

My current avatar here is of Link, the SD13 boy BJD from Volks of Japan.

Might want to make it a tad more flesh colored, but that just could be the lighting in your picture example. This looks like it might work. Keep going!
