Subject: MetaBlobs in V6I?

My Vue 8 Complete lacks  the ability to Bake to Polygons in the object menu like you can in V8i

I want to make and convert a metablob object to a mesh.

I still own Vue 6 infinite it's just not installed.I was thinking of installing it so I could use that feature.

So 5 questions about V6I since I have not used that version in while.

1:Does Vue 6 Infinite have the Bake to polygons feature?

2:Was also wondering in V6I would run on my 64bit win 7 os even though it's a 32bit app?

3:Can you adjust the polygon count at baking time?

4:Are metablob options the same in V6I as in V8 such as when you edit have the choices of Envelope, Intensity and Additive/Subtractive?

5:Do you think that running the 32bit V6I and the 64bit V8C on the same machine would be a problem?

I fired up my old V6I. :-)

  1. Yes you can bake to polygons.
  2. V6I run in 64Bit mode on my Windows 7 ^^
  3. Yes
  4. Yes it is the same
  5. V6I run in 64 Bit mode.

Version is 6.60-04 Build 292711

I installed it and can bake to polys now, then I can export to use that mesh in V8C

My V6I build is 288166

I'm not updating to 292711 because
Peggy walters had posted a warning.

"Vue 6 Infinite Updates **Warning!

Updates for Windows are not supported on Windows 7. Applying the update or a language patch on an unsupported OS may result in severe data loss.**

This is the warning message when you click on the Get Update button for Vue 6 Infinite.  This applies to the update patch for Vue 6 Infinite only - not the upgrade from Vue 5 to Vue 6 Infinite"

So unless something I need is messed up I'll just run as is.

Silly question perhaps: why do you need to bake it before exporting? Just export the metablob, in effect it does what the baking does, converts to  a polygonal object before writing out. (You can chose resolution).

Not a silly question at all.
I was asking myself the same thing before you posted.

I had though that bakeing to polys was the only way to make a metablob object into a mesh to avoid artifacting when applying a displacement map.

For some odd reason I did not see the export object available for Metablob object earlier before my original post

That's why I was looking for another way to do it.
But a few minutes ago I noticed it (the export object) under the File tab
So it is there in V8C. It seems i could export as a mesh then import it and continue on.
 
The reason I'm doing this is there is artifacts on metablob object when using displacement map that are supposedly not a problem on a mesh.

so then maybe the only avantage to baking to polys is just a workflow issue.
Maybe to avoid the export and import and still be able to propery apply displacement.
Just a guess.
