A  heatwave here has me finding the nearest glacier that hasn't melted totally and sitting myself under a shade tree near it!  LOL

Seriously glad that your health is improved, though. :)

**silverblade33,

I'm really wanting to organize my Poser 8 files. You're right, they are such a mess, but I have a few questions about it that I'm hoping you wouldn't mind answering:

  1. So you don't have a Runtime folder that everything is under?
  2. If not, what is the top level folder you put all the rest of your folders in? It looks like in your screen shot they are just placed under your C drive folder.
  3. If you don't have a Runtime folder doesn't that mess up Poser and if I change my folder structure won't that mess up my already created characters in Vue and Poser?
  4. Will this help so that when we import to Vue we won't have to manually search for materials that Vue can't seem to find?

Thanks** **silverblade33. You're a Godsend!

Michael

Michaelab

no, I have many Runtimes :)

I name them simply so it's easy to get what they are
Poser Mike4
Poser Vicky3
Poser Fantasy props
Poser Buildings

etc, don't bunch 'em up under a few folders, better to have many very specific folders!

Obviously keep all Mike4 only items, like conforming clothes, in Mike 4, but is a set of fantasy weapons says "For Mike4"..it's not really Mike only, it should be in fantasy props,
likewise many types of hair are not figure specific, so are best saved in a "hair" folder.

some of course go in several folders like a few thematic clothing/prop sets meant for Mike 4 and Vicky4

Some old DAZ installers require a copy of Poser.exe to be in the folder, to find 'em, but that's only for very old stuff
I've been buying their stuff for a long time and they've been retro-fitting a lot of their installers, so it shouldn't be a problem with anything you buy now I think?

aye all placed under C: provided C: is big enough as they take a HUGE loads of space up, my poser stuff is about 125 gigs
remember that's the saved files, AND then the installed ones from that, and as said, always save the webpage, pics of, and readmes of content in the saved folder to make it easier to find stuff.

nah Poser can find it again, but you have to point poser in right direction, with Poser 8 just use the ADD LIBRARY button to add in each of yer libraries, nice and simple :)

uusally Vue will find the stuff no problem, least for me I've had no bother but I ignored Poser7, went form 6 to 8.
and as I note in my tuts, you cna export the ENTIRE contents of a Psoer scene to a folder, obj models, textures, everything, in an emergency.

:)

yes, I am, ain't I? ;) he says like Daffy Duck

Thanks, but I guess what I'm getting at is that you don't have to name them 'Runtime'? And if so, you just take all the folders under Runtime and place them wherever you want on your computer? What about the folders that are on peer with Runtime (under the Poser folder) like Hair, Lights, Props, DATA, CONTENT, etc? Do you just leave them under the Poser folder?

My Poser folder layout is attached as Poser automatically installed them on my machine.

no you HAVE to install them in new seperate folders! :)

make the folder
copy/save the install file there
(plus the webpage, info, pics if you wish)
then install the item to THIS new folder

so, mike4, you get say
"Mike 4's fantasy armour"

make new folder inside your new Psoer mike 4 directory
C:poser Mike4mike 4 fantasy armour
save

if it's a DAZ installer, install to
c:Poser Mike 4
because the installer makes, or adds into, a RUNTIME folder in the Poser Mike 4
folder.
you understand? :)
DAZ installers create a "runtime" folder in EVERY folder you use

if it' s a.zip file, copy the zip file up into the main
Poser Mike 4
directory
unzip there, it will unzip automaticlaly into "Runtime" directory.
All well made Poser zip files will unzip to a Runtime folder. but this means unzipping from the main folder by copying up into it, or, by navigating an unzip menu

and in each Runtime folder DAZ installers or Zip files make, will be the texture, library and other folders, autumatically.
You see? :)

and not aimed at any of the posters in this thread, but at folk who may wonder how I have so much stuff...
I've been collecting for over 10 years, that's why!

DAZ3D platinum clubs awesome way to get free/cheap stuff.
I used ot have a huge load of free stuff back from my Bryce days but got rid of that to keep everything as much stire bought only as possible, so not to worry about commercial useage if I sell a render, etc.

I save stuff I bought form Xurge in a seperate folder until I moved it to other ones, as I bought a lot of their very cool outfits in oen go due to a sale, I have accounts with them, DAZ and others, and can prove it.

My apps, listed on bottm row, left to right are:

Photoshop CS4 Extended (32 bit, as 64 bit won't work with a lot of my old plugins)

PaintShopPro X2, PSP was for years my fave 2 D app and is still great for making tutorial pics etc

Rhino4, bought V2 in college (studnet prices, woot), and upgraded ever since.

Poser 8. I've had 4, 5, 6, sckipped 7, and bought upgrade to 8.

VSO Image Resizer, very damn handy! and free

COlor COp, very handy for getting the RGB colour form a pic

3dCoat3, 64 bit, another app I ain't had time/health to learn, sigh, damn nicer to use than Zbrush

UVMapper Pro3, used UVmapper for ages

Shader Map Pro, another item I bought dirt cheap cause I check for sales/newsletters all the time

Atangeo balancer, since I use Rhino, alas, my models suck ass for HUGE polygon counts

Grobto, another I picked up dirt cheap from a newsletter, you never have neough tools

D&D character Builder, ok, so, I'm a geek ;)

Dreamweaver4, too damn expensive to upgrade so stayed iwth it all these years and used money on art apps instead.

Vue8

IE8

Nero

Sculptris

If you have no kids, SO, or much of a life, you can buy art stuff :p
