Subject: Is it possible to make dry conforming hair look wet?

3DNeo ( ) posted Thu, 17 June 2010 at 8:58 AM · edited Thu, 23 January 2025 at 3:39 PM

I am trying to figure out if there is a way to make V4, or for that matter any hair conforming figure, look "wet" if it is not? In other words, most hair that you buy is dry with no "wet" version of it included. If you are wanting consistency by using the SAME hair in your renders, then I have found it nearly impossible to do. Of course, making the skin wet works great as I find that actually using brushes and blending on skin textures in Photoshop to work quite well. But I have yet to determine if there is a way to make a REALISTIC looking dry hair look wet.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

my only thoughts on this besides postwork, would be that while dry hair tends to fall uniformly and evenly, wet hair tends to clump together in strands. with that in mind I would say you might try modifying the trans map to match that effect. if you then also morphed/scaled the hair to be tighter to the head, implying weight it might add to the illusion. last thought would be, depending on the type of hair, to add an oversized  prop version of the hair over the top of the conforming one, and make a water drop transparency map for it, although that might just be the mad scientist in me.

what if you raised the shading rate to make the hair texture blurrier and added blinn or more  highlight?

Thanks for the thoughts and replies on this. I will be trying a few of these to see what I can come up with.

In regard to the images by ice-boy, that is sort of what I am referring to, but not quite as pulled back along the hairline of the head, just "wet" hair. Those images look more like hair that has been slicked back or gone through after it was wet. If a character is under say a water spray, just getting out of the ocean, etc. then the hair just needs to be wet and not slick.

One thing I have found is you can get that wet look much better with the shorter hair figures/props than with long hair ones Most hair you buy has a lot of morphs and such built-in with makes the hair realistic. That is why I am trying to get hair like that to fall like in the morphs of the hair but be wet instead. I will try what others said here and see what I can come up with.

If anyone else would like to post results and how they set the nodes or modified the transmap that would be nice to see too. I have tried before and failed to achieve a good result, that is why I am trying to figure out how or if this can be done.
