Subject: ZIP files

I'm sure this has been asked before, but why won't the forums here accept .zip files? Several times I've uploaded a file for someone, conscientiously zipping it first to save bandwidth, only to find that rendo just discards it. Sure, you can rename it to .txt or .jpg or something and then it'll be accepted - but that's inconvenient for both poster and downloader, and can lead to confusion.

Every other forum I know of accepts zips - could we enable this here too, please?

Online Now!

It might be useful to accept other Poser format files too, such as PP2, OBJ, PY for instance, as I believe they do at RDNA (haven't checked their new forums yet). If it's only a very small file, as one might use when giving an example to illustrate a technique, then zipping it up just adds time and saving a kilobyte or two is neither here nor there.

posting .py files would be awesome.

All you need to do is append ".txt" (or any other extension that is acceptable) which anyone downloading can strip off.

The 200KB limit is the biggest factor is what you can attach to a post.

I suspect that you should restrict attachments to things that are relevant to the thread and which wouldn't make sense if uploaded to the FreeStuff.

I know you can do that, as I said in my original post. Because you can do that, it's impossible to argue that not allowing .zips is some kind of security measure. But it's annoying that you have to do it at all, when every other forum I visit let's you upload .zips. I'm not bothered about the size limit, there clearly has to be one.

I'm a bit surprised by the absence of any comment from a rendo admin to this question.

Im not stating this as fact, but I would think allowing files to be uploaded into the forums by the general populace in any form would pose a security risk.

As it is, anywhere a file is uploaded outside of gallery images, it must be manually checked and approved...way too many forums here for the staff to check every thread every day in order to spot the uploads...

You have to check with StaceyG tho as that is just my guess why it isn't allowed.

No more risk than allowing people to post links to files.
Attaching small files (those within the 200KB limit) has always been possible, are you thinking that may change ?

As has been suggested in the original threads discussing extensions, the allowed set could do with a bit of tweaking to match the specific needs of this site, rather than the generic list built-in to Bondware's software.

That can't be right, though. In the forums at present we can upload .jpg and .txt files without anybody checking them. If I want to upload a .zip file, I can do it - as long as I rename it to .jpg or .txt first. I don't really understand why it would be more of a security risk to allow files with the .zip extension to be uploaded. After all, I could upload an executable or script file by renaming it first. Just seems illogical; and if it's that great a risk, why does every other board allow it?

My impression is that it's just a default setting in the board software which no-one has changed. Could it be looked at again?
