Subject: Props folder grayed out

MtnMist ( ) posted Thu, 15 July 2010 at 3:14 PM · edited Mon, 22 July 2024 at 8:33 PM

Hi all - I apologize if this has been asked before but I can't locate a solution.  I have Poser7 and when I opened it today the 'props' folder is grayed out.  I checked through Windows Explorer and the folder and all content is still there, but within the program itself, it's grayed out.  I've closed and restarted the program half a dozen times but it didn't help.  Does anyone know how to correct this?  Many thanks in advance.

Linda

Hmm.. that one is new to me. Try detaching the runtime and reattach it. Only thing I can think of...

If you're using Win7 or Vista it sounds like UAC has locked the folder, it's the main Runtime props folder isn't it?

Thank you, Trekkie and Lucifer, for your suggestions and help.  I use XP Media Center, so it wasn't a Win7 or Vista glitch (which might have been easier to fix?).   After opening/closing Poser 7 several times and  rebooting the computer numerous times I just did a complete reinstall of Poser.   Very relieved that all content and folders are back in place.  I still, however, have no idea what initially caused the problem or why the content showed in Windows Explorer but the props folder remained grayed out in the program.

Have you installed all the SR's available for P7?  SM is up to 3 currently.

Thanks, hborre.  Yeah, I just checked and I do have the most current, SP3.

Generally this is just a corrupted Prefence File and a full reinstall is not needed. Always try Preferences and MSCONFIG first... you will save yourself some time if they doresolve the issue.

Thanks, ratscloset.  I just checked and skimmed through the preferences tab content but I'm not sure what I could change that would bring back the grayed out folder.  This is a great tip should it happen again.  May I ask what preference setting you meant?

On a Mac, this occurred when a specific runtime got to big. Not sure if the same occurs on windows. But once I broke the runtime apart it solved my problem under P7. Based on the new library system of P8-PP2010, I doubt this will ever be a problem again.

Curious, did you recently add more content to your runtime. If so, that might be it.

Thanks, grichter.  Yeah, I did add things recently and I admit my runtime is probably bloated.   Is there a tutorial on how to break apart a runtime?  If it's doof-proof I think I'll try it.  I don't, as a rule, do techie things to my programs because my attempts are usually fatal.  :)

The Preference Files are not the Preference Settings, but files created by Poser to handle how it launches. There is a KB article at Smith Micro on removing/deleting Preference Files for Poser.

That is what you may need to do.

Library Size should not cause this issue...that normally causes slowdowns for some users, but not your issue.

Thank you, ratscloset!  On my way to SmithMicro (who still hasn't responded to my issue question).

Heh Ratscloset IS the person at SmithMicro who'll eventually handle your ticket :) And he's good at it, too

(do I get browniepoints for that one, John?)

And just thinking aloud here.. I remember - vaguely - something about certain "odd" signs or letters causing problems... but was that in even earlier versions? and COULD that have been the case here at all?
