Subject: Where do your custom-saved CR2's go?

Davey_V ( ) posted Sat, 17 July 2010 at 4:32 PM · edited Wed, 22 January 2025 at 2:38 AM

Hello, all.

I was wondering if anyone knew where your custom characters go when you "add to library" in poser 7/8.
For instance, you added custom textures, re-parented objects to your figure, adjusted everything, and then added it to a custom library in the sidebar. I can always access these files while poser is running, but they are nowhere to be found in the runtime/libraries/characters.
The problem is, I bought a new computer, and just merged my entire runtime over from a external drive, and everything is there...except my custom characters.

So, with that information, who knows where the files go? My documents?
or should I just save each individual as a PZ3 instead of a CR2?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Hm. Which Windows version are you using? And if it's Vista or Windows7, did you install it at the default location in C:Program Files? Never do that, it's asking for problems.

Now if it's not the case.. have you tried a search for it on your computer? try calling it something that is definitely YOUR name - to make the search faster and more accurate :)

In whatever library is currently selected when you save.  Note only the CR2 will be saved there and not anything else, EXCEPT if you modify the geometry with the group editor/ hair room, and PMD files if "Use External Binary Morph Targets" is enabled.  Texture files will never be moved or copied regardless of what you do in the library.

Typically this is in PoserRuntimeLibraries.

I have my figures in separate external Runtimes, so I save them to the Runtime of the corresponding figure.

I create new folders in my Characters library and save them there.

If you are using P8, hover over the folder or content and you will see a popup of your absolute path.

Hi guys. Thanks for the tips, but I think the problem lies with the way poser actually saves the file. I fired up the old computer, went into the program files runtime and added a new folder. Then, from inside poser, I added a character as a "whole group" to the folder, and saved it. Went back to program files and the folder was empty. I think, when you add to a library, it doesn't actually save it as a CR2, but just saves all the references and paths. Because only poser and DAZ studio can actually find and read these files.

Luckily, it's just a matter of re-making all of the custom vehicles and characters. Their installed base models work just fine, and I still have all my custom textures.

I guess when poser found out I was getting a six-core computer to compensate for its sluggishness, it just had to get one more shot in...

Dunno, that's pretty different from how Poser has always behaved for me.

Poser DOES save a file in whatever folder you direct it to.

You never answered my question about Windows version and it IS important, as the UAC has a nasty habit of f'ing things up.

Until we know all the details it's impossible to help you. I've saced several HUNDRED of characters tot he Figures palette and none of them has ever been invisible for further editing in other programs.

So what you claim makes no sense. We're trying to help you find out what happened, but it's NOT your processor, that much is certain.

Oh a thought just struck me.. are you using compressed files? In that case you should look for a CRZ not a CR2. I think Poser defaults to compressed files...

I apologize for not being specific. My old computer ran on vista. I bounced between both poser 7 AND 8 with no issues. I only moved the runtime folder from one computer to the next. All custom folders made from within poser's libraries palette, and all saved custom characters DO NOT show up in the runtime (on either computer). CR2, CRZs are always present as long as they are in their original folders (libraries/character/DAZ people, etc).

My new computer has windows 7, and has no issues with installed poser content, but poser 2010 will not let me save a character as a group (say, m4 parented to a car).

Davey_V ( ) posted Sat, 17 July 2010 at 7:14 PM

Okay, here's how this works...if you run Poser 7,8 or 2010 pro AS ADMINISTRATOR, you can save the files into the libraries palette, and they WILL show up. So the problem had more to do with Windows. Poser 2010 told me "access denied" when I tried to save a character, so that tipped me off to run it as administrator. So all I need to do is load poser normally, save each individual character as a PZ3, re-load poser AS ADMINISTRATOR, load each PZ3 and THEN save them. Then they all appear in the runtime ready to be transported to a better machine.

...Now I couldn't possibly be the only one who had this problem...but if any of you ever have this issue in the future, that's how to fix it.

Thanks for the help, anyway.

Sorry for being confused. It's late and since I'm midways in my holidays i'm not totally sober which may account for some difficulties in understanding.. but...

You're saying that the files are visible .. where? In Poser or in your Explorer?

Also.. I just tried to save a V4 parendted to a bench in PP2010 - it savbed just fine and I can see the file in my explorer by going to the place where it's saved, in my case K:ProgrammerMetaCreationsPoser 4RuntimeLibrariescharacterTrekkieGrrrlTEST
(yes I'm still using large parts of my Poser 4 runtime even in PP2010)

So.. I am sorry but I'm not sure what your problem is. And I can't reproduce it.

Ah we crossposted while I was trying to save a file to try it out.

In your case it is most likely a UAC problem, since you CAN save it as administrator. I'm always using my administrator account since this is MY computer and no one else is touching it, so I forgot that some people aren't necessarily being administrators when they're logged in.
