Subject: New Graphics card?

Hello, I was hoping to get some input on what would be the best card to use for Vue 8I. I need one that only uses one slot and doesn't need it's own power supply (if possible) I'm also looking to have at least 1gig of ram. My ati radeon HD 4800, doesn't seem to like Vue too much. The opengl sometimes just goes wonky on me. And I can't even use the opengl 2.1 (shader 4) as it put black boxes around everything. :(

At this point money isn't really an issue... (well within reason)

You should go for NVidia, I bought a Radeon 5900 HD 2G DDR5, and Vue hates it. I can play any game out there like watching a movie though, so it has it's pros and cons. But Vue as i said hates it. tells me that my video card doesent meet minimum requirements ect. And it is the baddest thing on the market. Gotta love Vue...

I use GTX480; for me the perfect card. Also supports CUDA on my preferred applications 3DCoat and Octane.  Win7 Ultimate 64 - GTX 480 - I7 975 3.33GHz - 12 GB RAM.

This may sound really stupid, but I'm a stupid person so here goes... Will a new faster video card make working with imported meshes and eccosystem and stuff like that faster? Or is that still dependant on the cpu?

R.P.Studios ( ) posted Thu, 22 July 2010 at 10:24 AM

all CPU, it does however depend a great deal on the new features of Vue that deal with OpenGL and displaying ecosystems in real time ect. ect.

Brian S. ( ) posted Thu, 22 July 2010 at 11:11 AM

So then you're saying it's basically just going to give me a better looking opengl then, right?

R.P.Studios ( ) posted Thu, 22 July 2010 at 12:21 PM

Yes, it will give you the ability to see things better without boxes and such, but I have 12 DDR3 and 2G on my card, and Vue still acts retarded half the time. Worse actually since the new system. Like for example Vue now doesent import alphas correctly/sometime not at all ect. and to be honest, from Vue 6, I dont see any difference in render times with my GODLY system. I think it is all propaganda...NVidia is the Microsoft of video cards :D

Ok, thanks for the help. I might just start saving up for a new PC instead. Lol!

R.P.Studios ( ) posted Thu, 22 July 2010 at 1:09 PM

Yeah, that is the best bet honestly man. I went through a couple of years of buying new video cards, adding ram new processor ect. ect.

i finnaly realised that buying the "good enough" doesent work, got tired of my rigs being obsolete the following year, so i took 5 grand and built my own. i have at least 2 years under my belt now LOL

Here a screen shot of an imported Poser figure, I add some heavy trees too. Watch the polygon count. (bad quallity of the screenshots because of renderosity 200kb limit)

Here the scene render. No tweaks on the materials.

poly count doesnt make a shit when you import POSER. polycount depends on INSTANCES of ecosystems. Vue is not hailed for its ability to handle 60,000 Poser characters, thats not what it is for, although it does it well :D

I cant get 6 million polys no problem into Cinema 4D, and Vue can handle BILLIONS, but not of Poser shit... NO WAY NO HOW...not unless you work for NASA :D

Or 25 Million polygons... but it is true user should not run a $1000 program on a $500 hardware 😉

My new system has nVidia cards (2 x GTS 240), and this has really improved things for previewing and modelling, especially with Hexagon and UV Mapper. Whereas the old computer would get really bogged down trying to rotate and pan, the new video cards make it much more useable.

I can also use OpenGL preview much more reliably in Vue, which is a god send when using some of the big city models from Stonemason.

I used to find moving the camera around really slow and jumpy and a new card has fixed that problem.  Also I have less crashes and everything seems faster and better to me when manipulating things in vue.

My main issue with Vue is this ( dont get me wrong i am a Vue fanboy from WWWAAAYYY BACK)

I love Vue, but since i built my new machine I have far more Vue related issues than I have ever had before. My machine (without the monitor) is over 5 grand as it sits. And the only thing i can think of is it is the OS, which is Vue 7 x64. If i wasnt an avid gamer i would run XP x64 for sure.

I now have random crashes, textures acting all freaky, where before there was NEVER a problem... but at least i don't get OOM errors anymore LOL

I assume you meant Windows 7 x64?

I've found Windows 7 works just fine, but I'd say video drivers always seem to be the big problem, so I've always endeavoured to install the Windows Hardware Quality Lab (WHQL) certified drivers in favour of any 'latest and greatest' version.

Also, now I have a stable system, I've used Windows 7 image backup to make a snapshot of the hard drive, and then disconnected the PC from the internet - that way nothing gets changed or upset.

The new fast and powerful graphic cards always require a connection to a strong power supply and because of the need to have a good cooling system installed, they all cover two slots.

If your computer is outdated in the above mentioned needed components, then i, too, would recommend to spare money for a newer computer system.

Maybe in the Vue developement future (what i really hope for) there will be some implementation of CUDA (Nvidia special) support - meaning, that certain functions (maybe even supporting the render process) will be calculated by the much faster GPU units of newer graphic cards ...

... by the way ... my Vue 8.5 Infinite runs great on my very good OS Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit ... Win XP gave me a lot of problems with many different things in the past (problems with other stuff, not Vue ), which worked a lot better with Windows Vista - and now even better with Win 7 ... ( Win XP -  last time installed 3 years ago and wiped off our home PCs and not missing it since then in any way - and i like to play good games, too )
