Subject: So I've got this free copy of carrera 7 pro...

...out of a 3d magazine...   Anyway, is there anything about carrera that is worth learning?  Will it render better than poser 8?

(I do have a general 3-d mesh editor already, but it doesn't support poser characters all that well....)

markschum ( ) posted Thu, 29 July 2010 at 5:38 PM

Carrara is great for landscapes, renders faster than Poser. It will load a Poser figure with posing ability intact.

thanks-

Aside from speed, are the renders better in any other way?  (ie: skin looks better, that sort of thing?)

Which 3D magazine and issue did you get your copy of Carera 7 Pro from?

I got mine from 3DArtist  # 17, but it will be in 3D World #113 as well-that issue also includes Mimic Pro for Carrara....

Thanks for the info.

Seems like we are a bit behind in issues up here in Canada.  3DArtist is at issue 116 and I usually buy 3D World.  The latest version of 3D World is issue 131 and it looks like Issue 133 is available in the UK.

Oh well.  Guess I'll patiently wait...

I meant to type 133 for the 3D World Issue number:  :blushing:

Hello,
compared to Poser7, Carrara 7 is much faster, but Poser 8 caught up.
Compared PoserPro2010 64 bit, I find it sometimes faster than Carrara 7 (depending on settings).
However, with Carrara Pro, you can have multiple computers working on the same
image. With Poser, every frame is computed on a single computer.

Best regards,
   Michael

would suggest not buying 3dartist issue 17 for the software CD (not a DVD), as it's
missing some content for the windows version and all content for the mac version.
the latter means it would be almost impossible for a newbie to learn how to use
the mac version, as the missing content is critical to the learning process IMVHO
(speaking as a raydream/carrara user for 10 yrs or more).  perhaps 3dworld will
ship with a dvd, as that's necessary for the entire content and app.

Plutom ( ) posted Fri, 30 July 2010 at 7:18 PM

Thank you WandW, I've been waiting for Carrara 7 Pro since we can only get 3Dworld here.  Now is Carrara 7 Pro worth learning---You betcha it is.  It has one of the best hard modeling programs around for the money.  Take a look at Mark Bremmer's example in the Carrara Forum.  He made an interior of a space ship or station that will be in a future 3D World magazine.  Jan

Oh, you mean the green-skinned girl on Carrara 7's splash at startup?  The jury is still out on that.

I've been looking through the content that came with C7Pro and it looks the same as what C6Pro came with.  Maybe I should have looked at the filenames on the CD before double-clicking them.  Did it say C6Content_Install.exe or something on the C7Pro disc?

It didn't have V4 in the content browser.  But my C6Pro doesn't have V4 either.  But I don't use V4.

Can't you download the Mac content from DAZ after you've registered it?

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Sat, 31 July 2010 at 5:22 PM

I saw no way to register the free copy of c7pro at daz, I saw no download link for c7pro content,
and mac version of c7pro on the 3dartist disk contains incomplete version of app installer package.
this means that daz would hafta allow us to download the full c7pro app in order for it to contain the
native content in the app installer package.  otherwise, mac users with knowledge of editing
the application package may be able to fix it up right, using the windows carraranativecontent.exe,
assuming they can install exe files in OS X.  however, it does work o.k. without doing that,
so it's still a good deal for $15 american IMVHO.  but I'd advise waiting for 3dworld instead.

I guess if you can prove you bought it somehow (!?) they will credit to you.

I mistakenly thought you could register it normally, but it seems someone managed to get their coverdisk version authenticated.

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Sun, 01 August 2010 at 1:40 AM

After the first 2,000 or so buyers of the mag register on DAZ3D, the link is removed or (in my case) the site states that the serial number has already been registered by someone else.  An email to DAZ3D support can still get you registered.

DAZ figures you'll buy the mag version of 7 pro to get the discount on the 8 pro upgrade...

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Sun, 01 August 2010 at 9:55 PM

o.k. if somebody registers it, let us know if daz allows ya to download the estimated 500 MB to 1 GB
in missing content.  I'm basing this on my c6pro folder being 1.6 GB in size vs. my c7pro folder
being 500 MB in size, after adding some missing content from the windows content installer.
p.s. the manual (~62 MB pdf) is free download at artzone.  in case anybody reads manuals,
which new user would hafta do IMVHO.  revision G: 11 dec 2008; 865 pp.

The 3D Artist one is Carrara 7 Pro. It appears that 3D World's is Carrara 7 Standard.

According to  3DWorldMagazine Issue 133,  it is Carrara 7 Pro.  Check out 3DWorldMag.com  Jan

DustRider ( ) posted Fri, 06 August 2010 at 10:15 PM

I prefer  to render in Carrara over Poser or DS. Cararra 7Pro is a very good package, and gets you into the upgrade path for C8 Pro - which has a true 64 bit version (not just the renderer like Poser). PoserPro 2010 has some very nice lighting and rendering enhancements, but I still like Carrara better (this may be because I know it better).

Carrara is definitely worth learning!! It gives you a lot in single package, and plays well with Poser content (though you will usually have to adjust materials/shaders a bit). If your interested, take a look at my gallery (http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/browse.php?username=DustRider ) to see what an occasional user can do with Carrara. I have a few renders I did in DS and Poser for comparison.

Morning DustRider, I just went through all of your postings.  There isn't a bad rendering in the bunch.  A couple of thumbs up on every one of them.  It shows that you took a lot of time on each one.

MyCat ( ) posted Sat, 07 August 2010 at 11:07 AM

Ah, I believed the paper magazine which I guess was out of date. On page 145 of issue 132 it promises "FREE! CARRARA 7 Full version of the modeling, lighting, and rendering app WORTH $125" which sounds like the price for the non-pro version.

The website though promises "Carrara 7 Pro *Full software worth $549" *

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Sun, 08 August 2010 at 7:39 PM · edited Sun, 08 August 2010 at 7:46 PM

I checked borders and B&N - 3Dworld 133 not in stock (my area).  will get it when avail., and see
what it's got.  y'all understand Daz would hafta be idiots to give away the full 1.6 GB app/contents,
which they didn't do in 3Dartist.  there appears to be a discrepancy between what they say and
what you get.

Plutom ( ) posted Sun, 08 August 2010 at 8:34 PM

I started Googling like crazy on this subject.  In the DAZ forum, folks did say that 3DArtist Issue 17 had the standard version of Carrara 7.  However 3DWorld Magazine does have the Pro version.  Hopefully the DAZ moderators would have corrected him if it wasn't true.  Jan

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Sun, 08 August 2010 at 8:47 PM · edited Sun, 08 August 2010 at 8:50 PM

My 3DArtist #17 came with Carrara Pro 7.2.  DigitalArts magazine included Carrara 7 standard.

I'm wondering which 3D Artist magazine  the folks in the DAZ forum were talking about, the one that went belly up in 2002 which had the standard version in their last issue #47 or the new one that started up 16 months ago.  I 'm getting a migrane.  Jan
