Subject: Windows 7 and poser temp files?

pokeydots ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2010 at 11:37 AM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 1:47 AM

Where do I find the temp files poser creates when you render an image?

I often wonder... why does Poser leave all those icache files behind when it's done? Are they reused in some way? What is it they are actually used for? Is this a bug that Smith Micro needs to address or is it a feature I just don't know about?

Inquiring Minds want to KNOW! :)

Re: icache

Those are irradiance cache files. (I think - not really sure) In theory, they could be used to skip the IDL precalc and reuse the previous results. In practice, I don't think there's a way to get it to do that.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

@ Inquiring Minds

Poser (automatically <= YES !!!) ... saves up to 100* previous renders that may be easily retrieved in the Render window for comparison or export by using the small "tear off" icon in the upper right hand corner of the Render window.

I have my # of renders set to 10 and use this feature quite frequently.

  • [menu]
"Edit" >>> "General Prefs..." >>> "Render" (tab) >>> "Cache" <= (set Max # of Renders here)

@ pokeydots ... You're quite welcome, glad it helped. 😄

But doesn't all those saved renders take up memory? I always lower mine to 2 for that reason. Or is that only ther undo levels that take up memory?

Yes, and yes ... just about anything you do is probably going to use some memory.
It's a trade off, what do you want to save?
Your choice. 😄

Need more memory? ... Can you expand the RAM?
Memory keeps getting less expensive all the time.

cheers.

I'm not sure if I need more memory (OK.. memory is always good of course but it's not that I'm running out of it as such)

BUT at the same time, there's no need to bog down Poser with unnecessary stuff IMO. And if you never USE the option of having like 10 renders saved, there's no need to waste memory on it :)

I guess it's a question of workflow. I always just save any render that comes out even semi-ok. some renders that are so-so can be quite nice with a bit of postwork - and if they're never used.. they're easily deleted :)

I think that all the previous renders are saved on the harddisk. So they will not
use any of your RAM, only disk space.

This is the path pp2010 holds them for me:
C:UsersMeAppDataRoamingPoser Pro2.0RenderCache "timestamp".exr
Poser save's them in .exr format.

I have set my value to 100. So its easy to display former renders, that i am not saving in
my ..render directory for perma storing.
Im using this feature almost evry time when i work with poser, to compare differences
in my renders, when i changed things in the scene.

btw: did you notice the WindowRecent Renders Menu.
Via this you get a preview of all your cached renders (pp2010)
(and of course, using this prievie cost's a bit memory, :)
