There is this flower.. known here as the brahma kamal. It blooms at night, once a year. it starts to bloom around 10 pm, and by midnight, it closes and dies. It's also called the Himalayan King. Lots of stories surround it. Seems during the Britisher's days in India, they'd hold night parties just to watch the flowers bloom. If you see it, you are supposed to be lucky. The scent is heavenly.. and the size of it is double the size of a palm.

We've got a couple of plants around. They've started blooming. I shot pix of them..sorry.. used my mobile phone camera..it's terrible for night shooting.. but whatever it is.. you can see how it looks. I picked up one and brought it in..

It's an amazing pix. The buds you see were shot during the day. It's got a peach fleshy mace type netting over it.

For those who know a bit of Hinduism..it's said that you can see Lord Krishna in it.. there are three pistils/stamens.. one that looks like his umbrella, the other that looks like the curves of the heads of the snakes above his chariot..and the other. himself.

There were ten that night. The scent was heady. I shot this at 11 pm. The long leaves are the leaves.. during the day..the leaves were opened. But at night.. after the flowers opened..they curled up a bit..looking tired.

An absolute beauty Rosie...thanks for telling us about this illusive flower. Now you've got me wondering about its fragrance.

tom271 ( ) posted Sat, 21 August 2010 at 12:05 AM

It is a miracle....   just once a year...     Perhaps our universe is like the brahma kamal flower except the time scales are different..

Quest.. the scent is sweet..and musky at the same time.

Tom..I think you are right if you think of rebirth.

I put it up on fb too..and I had someone who said his family would sit up with cups of coffee to watch it.

It starts off as a small pea bud..then takes at least 20 days to grow into that sized bud..and then bloom.

smeone did a time lapse video of it opening on youtube www.youtube.com/watch

Lol..Connie..at least i remembered my keys! have a habit of forgetting them and locking meself our of the house!

Thanks for the pix and the commentary.  I can drink a pot of coffee and lay down and be asleep in two minutes.

Very pretty, thanks for sharing. We have something almost the same here. It's called the Night Blooming Cereus or moon flower. It blooms once or twice around may 30th at night. Here's a picture from wikipedia.

I'm always amazed  that different things pop up on other sides of the planet and do the same things.

I have a serious sleep problem.  From the time I wake in the morning, until I go to bed, I am fighting hard to stay awake.  I could sleep 20 hours a day with no problem.  I can sleep anywhere, anytime.  Coffee just makes me have to pee more.

erosiaart ( ) posted Mon, 23 August 2010 at 10:15 AM

LOL!!  That happens to me when I drink coffee..and I wake up in the morning a few pounds lighter than I am... You are lucky being able to sleep anytime. I can't. I may be dying of exhaution in the afternoon.. 10 mins sleep is all that I'll get.

Tom.. gorgeous universe.. yup.. it's like the universe with our lives wafting along within it.

Electro.. awesome.  It looks as if it's from the same family.. It looks so pretty! Like the moon and the sun..

zorzim ( ) posted Thu, 26 August 2010 at 4:45 PM

Rosieee !

Fantastic flower and shots...  surely you will be VERY lucky.
I was so  fascinated by the flower's story....

Does it happens frequently near yr home to find botanical
rarities ... ?

electroglyph ( ) posted Thu, 26 August 2010 at 7:25 PM

Silly zorzim... Rosie IS a botanical rarity!

zorzim ( ) posted Fri, 27 August 2010 at 6:03 AM

LOL,
electroglyph, I dunno if she's gonna interpret your remark as a
compliment or not.....

erosiaart ( ) posted Fri, 27 August 2010 at 6:08 AM

electro..  😊  Thank you for a wonderful compliment!

zorzim.. ..as for botanical rarities.. depends.. there are gardens and nurseries around.. though not in excellent state.. would have a few rare plants. The public garden near my place has the oldest banyan tree in town.. a couple hundred years old. The rose nursery not tooo far off..sells more than 100 types of roses..and to boot..has 20 peacocks and peahens..and is built on an old British soldier's graveyard.

My Dad had an African violet..which is rare in India. It was taken by the family Dr..who healed it..and put it in a flower show. it won first prize.

erosiaart ( ) posted Fri, 27 August 2010 at 6:11 AM

LOL!! Zorzim..I  had no other choice than to do that... short of putting my hands on my hips..staring at electro and bubbling out.. "you called me a plant??"

Rayraz ( ) posted Fri, 27 August 2010 at 6:16 AM

Seems to me Rosies life is far to hectic for her to be very vegetative :-P

On the other hand.. if you're making a reference to beautiful flowers or such.. that's actually quite poetic.. hmm...okay, I'll declare electroglyph is our forum rico suave hahaha

LOL!! My tummy is hurting now from all that laughing.. and I am tickled pink!

Rayraz.. busy? Tis true..but time i try to spare for the forum and bryce and wonderful stuff. Chocolate and wine with any of you?  I'll have time for that.  Also busy with a roly poly family guest who informed the entire neighborhood yesterday that I was ill when she shouted up the stairs to my housekeeper. "make rosie drink her medicines and go to sleep! ' ( flu bug).

Go bryce, everyone..go bryce! I hear mats and terrains calling, the sounds of lights twinkling and obps whistling!

ThunderStone ( ) posted Fri, 27 August 2010 at 9:37 AM

Eh, Rosie? Don't you mean "I hear mats and terrains calling, the sounds of lights twinkling and computers crashing! "?  Lovely pictures and I'm impressed. Thanks for sharing...

Analog..pop out here next monsoon..

Thunderstone.. create..objects...bryce premium.  Not a menu me happy with..ie..when i click on any of the squares in the bryce premium, it slows up bryce! I've got bryce 7 pro..

ThunderStone ( ) posted Fri, 27 August 2010 at 8:46 PM

LOL Oh, that!!!! Okay you mean the telly poles... YEah, I don't think they optimize it well enough... One click and it's hang times for me. It might just be my computer that acts up with the latest Bryce.

Rosie...by any other name. I think your parents were guilty of calling you a flower long before I thought of it.

I've got three just like you at home. Every time Becca walks through the yard she finds a four leaf clover and brings it to me. I think you're very sweet to want to share with us.

erosiaart ( ) posted Sun, 29 August 2010 at 8:55 AM

Give Becca a hug from me..electro..she sounds wonderful

One of my philosophies in life? if something is beautiful..it has to be shared to stay beautiful. . Otherwise..it's just a momentary beauty. ..lasting only for that moment to fade away and die. And that's sad.

Lol.. you are right about the name. I've looked into my sisters; mobile directory and they have me under 'rose'. even my aunt calls me that! Kinda cute.

erosiaart ( ) posted Sun, 29 August 2010 at 9:13 AM

Thunderstone..why is it we need so many tellie (tel) poles??? Is it a bug or something? the menu keeps hanging quite a bit..slows down bryce dramatically......

ThunderStone ( ) posted Sun, 29 August 2010 at 6:21 PM · edited Sun, 29 August 2010 at 6:21 PM

Rosie, re: tellie poles? My guess is they don't have anything new to put include in the content to make it different from those other versions, so they included those hi poly remnant of a long forgotten scenery from the master class series.... Heck! I don't know! I am so disgusted with the many bugs that pops up... Did manage to do a scene or two in the pro version, tho.  Nothing to write home to mother about tho...  Yes, the whole software is one big bug fest! :cursing:
