This weekend may be the time to buy. SM is running a sale on 50% off of EVERYTHING. Now, a coupon may be needed, so if you haven't signed up for emails from SM, now may be the time ;o).

Just thought I'd mention it ;o).

I just got an email this minute from Content Paradise, they're also having a 50% off everything sale this weekend, there's a coupon code included in the email. Poser8 & PP2010 are included in the sale there too.

Groovy!  Now all I have to do is rustle up the other 50% and the cash to buy a new system to run it on.  :)

I just got the email.

Apparently Morphing Clothes is also sold at CP, so this may be your chance to get it at 50% off :) I'd certainly go for it if I had any money to spare.

Maybe not but I'll just bet you need something better than my ancient machines.  They're so old the OS is in Latin.

the main reason to upgrade is for the power hungry IDL?

It's not that IDL is so much power hungry, Poser 8 itself is. But BB gave a fix for that and showed how to make Poser run at a lower priority so that it's not gobbling all your cpu cycles. Works like a charm :o). I'm a happy woman...lol.

A little patience goes a long way. If I just could have held on for two stinking weeks I'd have $125.00 to spend on more stuff and clear out my wish list.

Yeah. I see so many people say they use 3 threads instead of 4. Running it below normal priority means full speed except when you need the computer. I have no trouble browsing or editing or compiling while a render is going at 100% CPU.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Before any of the service packs for P8 arrived, I tried running P8 on my five year old Toshiba with all four threads and the laptop actually froze up near the end of the render. I could not bail out or get the computer to shut off without unplugging it and pulling the battery out. Since then I have only rendered P8 with 2 threads. I have not attempted to bump it up to 3 threads. Maybe with the serial updates that have come down I could run P8 with 4 threads, but I'm a bit gunshy to even try it. And this is also a reason why I have not tried out Luxrender either. I seriously need a new laptop but there are other real life priorities.

Yippee, and right after my birthday too -- on Labor Day! :thumbupboth:

(in fact, I hope to get before it ends Monday)

So, please go easy on me for a poor soul, but is Poser 8 a good step forward to 7?  I'm still running 7.

Cheers.

Why is it that I feel so archaic, with my 2ghz Celeron, and Poser 7? c.c

Maybe this is the reason it took me 20 hours for a volumetric lighting render.. c.c  Bet it'd take 20 minutes with something more modern.

Hate to "me too" but, me too. My PC is circa 2003, P4 2.8 1gig RAM blah-blah-blah and it's running Poser Pro 2010, which I got at a half-off upgrade special before we came away on hols. Not, it's not a speed-demon, but then, neither am I. 😄

Tells me I need to sign up for the newsletter to get the free animals, yet I followed the link in my newsletter to get there. That is why I don't shop there, one hand doesn't know what the other is doing. I'm looking at the 50% off email right now as I'm typing this, and when I sign in and look at my account everything is upd.

Not working for me either. Thought I'd get P8 cheap.

masha ( ) posted Mon, 06 September 2010 at 8:40 PM

Coupon code not working here either.  Says 'invalid or expired coupon'   Dunno where Smith Micro is located but US Eastern time right now says 9:37 pm and West Coast is 6:37 pm so well before the expiry time of 11:59 pm on 9th Sept there.

Wonder if SmithMicro makes good on their offer even after expiry time as long as you report it before it happens?

Well if they give a hoot about their reputation it behooves them to do so.

'Behooves"?  Where did that word pop up from?  Don't think I ever used it before.  Heh, do certain words strike you as just weird?

I just got the email today. It says the sale goes until Sept 30/10.

I entered a contest, so I'm going to see if I am lucky enough to win, before I go and buy it.

Keeping fingers crossed for you Acadia ::)

@**Kaibach   :) ** I knew its meaning ok, just never actually used it before yet out it popped like from some secret dusty archive and I was taken by surprise.  Like where did that come from?  Maybe there are heaps of funny little words like this you've read once upon a time which are just waiting for a rare opportunity to be used.

Anyhow SM didn't feel it behooved them to even reply to my remonstrations.
[Another funny little word :)

jerr3d ( ) posted Wed, 08 September 2010 at 5:24 AM

Upon what criteria do you predicate that hypothesis?

masha ( ) posted Wed, 08 September 2010 at 11:58 PM

hehe, 'coz behooves is an old word maybe ancient, and nowadays you don't hear remonstrate used much either so I postulated that it pops up from some dusty archive in the brain.

I'm not at all sure this is an intelligent reply to your question even  though I looked up  'predicate'.   English is my second language and not all of it makes sense to me, lol.

As to the topic, a $50 saving on the sidegrade of PPro 2010  is  still better than nothing I say, but  less than the half-price I missed out on because the coupon wasn't accepted so I might do without.
