Subject: bourbon/whiskey shader?

MsPeril ( ) posted Fri, 03 September 2010 at 10:19 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 4:27 AM

hi everyone - has anyone come across a decent liquid shader for bourbon/whiskey?

thanks in advance :)

basicwiz ( ) posted Fri, 03 September 2010 at 12:53 PM

I hate to state the obvious, but...

Did you try putting a yellow-brown color on an existing liquid shader???

Latexluv ( ) posted Fri, 03 September 2010 at 4:23 PM

There are very few if any liquid shaders out there besides BB's Milk and Beer shaders. I have been meaning to bring this up as a topic of discussion and see if anyone had some ideas for convincing liquid shaders.

@basicwiz - I have, but the result seems flat and unconvincing...

@latexluv - BB's milk and beer are superb (he very generously made them when I was looking for the liquids for a scene a while back). I couldn't agree more, tho - a set of diverse liquid shaders of the same fantastic quality would be very useful (and probably very commercially viable**)

BB's been hard at work on the Luxpose exporter project so I'm not even sure how much of the forum he gets to actually read. Hmm, I also think he mentioned something about not getting ebots to topics he has replied to.  I have had that problem off and on as well. Sometimes I have to come back and re-read threads to see if replies were made.  We can hope that maybe though someone will come along with some screen shots of some of their ideas for liquid shaders. My small and simplistic attempts have not been adequate.

This is one of my better attempts. Not quite whiskey, more apricot-ish.

That's really very nice - and probably about right for a darker whiskey! way better than my feeble attempts :) would you mind giving me some hints about how you set up the shader? :)

It's terribly simple. Here's the screen shot.

I have a glass of whisk(e)y with ice cubes and all in my free stuff. Feel free to take a look at the shader I used (it was some years ago so I can't remember what it was like, but I liked the look) and grab that if it's usable :)

(Due to the angle of the render (to show the ice cubes) it's hard to see the colour of the drink. But IIRC it looked pretty nice)

Yes, I was going to mention Trekkie's whiskey prop also. I was doing a render of it and then had to go to bed.

I have a scotch bottle and rocks glass on my site (freebie props)  but it was back in Poser 5 so I'm not sure that would help very much.

many thanks, TG and kendra - I've downloaded both props :) I love TG's scotch shader - perfect, thanks! and the bottle is sure to come in handy! :)

OMG! TG's Whiskey Glass looks AWFUL in Poser Pro 2010! What could be wrong with this? This was loaded from a fresh install with no material changes whatsoever.

That happened to me too with the whole prop - the whiskey shader works wonderfully by itself, tho

Latexluv ( ) posted Tue, 07 September 2010 at 4:54 PM

Trekki's prop has reflect and refract in the shader. In order to render and look like glass, it must have something to reflect and refract off of. So put in some sort of back drop or a room corner and maybe also put in BB's Environment sphere with and image on it. Render with at least 5 or 6 raytrace bounces. Give me a few and I'll do a render for you. I'm using Poser 8.

Here we go. Sorry that took a bit of time. This is Trekkie's whiskey glass. Personally, I think the refraction is a bit too high, but I didn't modify the shader because I was demo-ing it for you.
