Subject: Tiles not applying correctly

Faerydae ( ) posted Tue, 21 September 2010 at 6:34 AM · edited Sat, 28 September 2024 at 10:11 PM

Someone bought this as a gift  market.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/index.php  when I render them they look like this img440.imageshack.us/img440/2386/fence2b.png When I load the object I go to the material room, add the tiles that come with the product, and render with the firefly engine. I've never seen this happen before. The vendor doesn't use Poser and has no clue what's causing it. Any ideas?? I'm using Poser 7. Any help appreciated!

Several questions beg asking: in his ad, the vendor states... **

"Product Requirements:** Any software capable of handling .obj - 3D files"

That's a bit nebulous. I'm surprised that a product in this unpolished state would pass testing. I'd be leery of buying anything with so little to go on, just based on that statement alone. You might ask him or her which software was used to model it. Did he or she UV map it?

In the ReadMe the vendor mentions some files that come with the package:
**Files Included in the Product:

catalog.pdf
license.txt
ReadMe.txt
Tips_for_Bryce.pdf
tips_for_use.pdf**

Do any of these contain any information on how to apply the textures for those fences in Poser?

I believe they used Blender to model it but waiting for them to confirm that as well as whether or not they uv mapped it.  I looked through every pdf and none of them state anything about poser or applying textures.

The vendor said they'd never used poser before, downloaded a trial version of poser 8 but couldn't get it to work there either, and suggested I go to the RDNA forums and ask for help. I'm probably just going to tell the friend that bought me this to ask for a refund because it's obviously not usable like this, and the vendor has pretty much told me to figure it out myself.

I don't know how this passed testing either. It is very misleading to say "Any software capable of handling .obj - 3D files" when that it obviously not the case and should have been checked in testing.

Thank you for your help!

I haven't done any exporting from Blender to Poser, personally, but it looks like it may not be properly UV-mapped. If that's the case, it's fixable with 3rd party software (UVmapper, I believe) but you'd still need to redo the texture maps, and that's too much trouble for something that's supposed to work "right out of the box". See if you can get a refund.

Or, you could apply procedural (node-based) textures and see if that works.

That is far too much trouble, and honestly just not worth it. I hope he/she at least changes the statement to let everyone know that it does not in fact work in any 3d program!

Thank you both for the help. It's truly appreciated!

Faerydae, try flipping the uv map in PSP or PS.  I know that when a uv map is created in Zbrush, to make it useable in Poser, it must be flipped.  Jan

Thanks Plutom, but as far as I can tell no uv maps came with it....just the bump maps and the seamless textures.

To see a UV map, you must load your obj file into a program like UV Mapper.  That is assuming that the UV map was generated in the first place when the object was created.

I model in Blender, and whilst UV mapping isn't a no-brainer, it's quite good and yields highly accurate, Poser-friendly UV maps. However, the modeller does need to make seams in order for the UV mapper to split the areas up appropriately, so ... like i said, not a no-brainer...

If the items weren't made specifically for Poser, they will be on an order of about 10 times too big (typically, depending on what scale was used in Blender)... they would need to be rescaled on import into Poser.

They issued me store credit. It's just not worth it to go through all that work for something that should be ready to use. I've never even used uv mapper, and as nice as the product could have been, it's not nice enough for me to have to learn a new program before I can use it.

I just hope Renderosity makes them change the product requirement statement before someone else buys it :/

Thanks again for the tips everyone!
