Subject: Missing Folder Mystery in Poser 8 on 32 bit system Windows 7

diomede ( ) posted Sat, 25 September 2010 at 9:47 PM · edited Fri, 03 January 2025 at 1:52 AM

I added a subfolder to my Poser 8 runtime.  I saved a morphed character to the subfolder.  I then went to Cararra and to my surprise, the folder was not in the content box for my Poser 8 runtime.  So, I went to Windows 7 and checked the file structure for my Poser 8 runtime.  Sure enough, the subfolder was not there.  I went back to Poser - it still lists the missing subfolder in the Poser 8 runtime and gives me access to the character's CR2.

Where oh where could my little file be?

I tried using Poser 8's native library.  I then tried another experiment with Dimension 3D's library script.  Both had the same result. Poser says it created a file subfolder and continues to access it.  The file subfolder cannot be found in Windows 7 or Cararra.

Turn on the detail panel in the library and click on the folder. Read with your own eyes the actual folder path. Then explain to us what happened.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

The mystery continues

Poser 8's library continues to say that the folder is there.

According to Poser 8, the library path is
c:program files (x86) Smith Micro Poser 8RuntimelibrariesCharacterV4 Chars
which is between a folder called Toonbraids and a folder called V4 Cuore di moda

However, simply navigating to the files using Windows 7 shows that there is no folder between Toonbraids and V4 Cuore di moda

and

Using the content tab in Carara and navigating to the Poser 8 runtime also lists Toonbraids followed by V4 Cuore di moda with nothing between.

Very odd.

UAC redirection in Windows 7.

Airport security is a burden we must all shoulder. Do your part, and please grope yourself in advance.

Thanks MagnusGreel.  I bet you are correct.  But what do I do about it?  I found the following on UAC redirection, but it doesn't say how I can get another program (such as Carara) to find the file or how I could find it myself if I ever wanted to delete it or something.

Resolution - just for peoplewith a similar problem who find this thread by searching the forums.  Once MagnusGreel alerted me to the Windows User Account Control (UAC) issue, I was able to find resources to help, including searching the forum threads for UAC.

Essentially, in my case, Windows would not allow Poser 8 to write files to my drive because I had installed Poser 8 in thedefault c:programs directory.  My Windows UAC settings prevent writing to those folders unless the administrator gives permission.  For some reason, Poser wouldn't prompt me to ask for permission.

My choices include but are not limited to

  1. uninstall Poser and reinstall it in the My Documents folders where permission to write is not required.

  2. only save my own work to runtimes created in the My Documents folders

  3. use the Windows control panel to turn off the security settings in the User Account Control, but then I would face greater risk of getting hacked

  4. leave everything where it is but run Poser as the administrator

For the moment, I am running Poser as an administrator by right-clicking on my Poser icon and choosing that option.  It has resolved the missing file mystery.

Furthermore, the UAC settings had also prevented me from uncompressing my obz files (in a way that I could find them again).  I have successfully retrieved the obj's now for morphs, etc.

My UAC settings are still set at relatively high security, I can create and find files in the Poser main directory, and Poser seems to be working well with C8 again.

Big thank you to MagnusGreel and the other helpful forum people.
