Peacefully, under sedation and in a comfortable bed.

I visited him yesterday but he wasn't conscious.  I knew then he wouldn't have long to go.

His cancer didn't give him any real pain, or at least, he didn't let on that it did.  Had a respiratory infection the last few days, which gave him some discomfort.

Taking everything into account, I'm happy for him to be at peace.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm glad he went peacefully. My Dad died a year ago June and we had to tell the doctors to shut off life support. He never would have gotten any better and that was really hard. I still feel guilty. My sympahties to you and your family.

Thank you, all.  He was my very best friend and the greatest man I ever knew.  Fortunately, there were no unsaid things or unresolved issues between us.  Besides, it wasn't that kind of a relationship, we always spoke our minds and there was never any tension.  I have nothing but happy memories.

@ Doc Geep - It's a Brit colloquialism which may sound as if it's a sad statement but is actually a happy one.  Read it to say, "My only memories of my Father are happy ones".  :)

@Sam , sorry to hear he died , but at least you had nothing unresolved.

@ Drifterlee, feeling guilty is natural, but you made what I believe was a good choice in a bad situation. If there is no chance of recovery then you need to ask "why are we keeping him alive" and answer it honestly.  Geep said it well.

Glad your father passed away in peace and without pain with you beside him. Let your memory of him through your lifetime journey with him carry you through. Remember the joys... Remember the sadness... Remember the blessings... Remember the pains... But always remember, he is never far from you if you hold his memory deep within your heart of hearts.
