Subject: Where should I start in Poser?

Hello, I am new to Poser. There are so many things that I can do but, I am not sure where to start. What is the easiest aspect to master in Poser?

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Sat, 06 November 2010 at 1:17 AM

Get the Practical Poser book.

The easest thing to master is asking questions here, and it seems you've mastered that. I learned and am still learning in circles. Bit of this. Bit of that. If you're new I would suggest reading up on GC, how to apply it, and IDL. These are huge helpers for the new, at least they were for me. Any time some guy named BagginsBill writes something about nodes in this forum read it. You won't understand it for a while, but eventually it sinks in, and you'll be much better for it.

Well, I have struggled for quite some time with Poser , yes finding this forum was the best thing that happened, however I am just going to the post office to collect this .Amazon.co.uk items (Sold by Amazon EU S.a.r.L.):

1  Infinite Skills Learning P...   £59.99               1   £59.99

Another tip is get a really good editing software , if you decide to make .mov

Animations.

I use final cut , this means I can chop bits of animation to make my .mov

This year I made a 12min .mov using Poser8.

Also working with Wings 3D a free programme to make .Obj file which will mean that I can one day make my own 3D clothing and Cars all that sort of thing.

Most important when you wish to jump on the computer because Poser has crashed go for a walk cool off drink a glass of cold water!!

Then if you really must Jump on the computer, do so I a cal and meaningful fashion.

I have been to the Post Office and collected the Package it looks very small for all that money however if it is half as good as Linda it should be fun.

Ok a few years ago there was a great tutorial quick time by Larry Mitchell

Published by lynda.com funny enough one of the best kept secrets, I managed to view a copy whilst serving in India.

Its seems it is no longer available, but wow it was very good for beginners to get there heads around Poser.

Its a sunny day here and I feel the need to lift the lid of the box and try to walk on the Salsbury Plain. After making my back up copy of Learning Poser8/Poser pro 2010

Have a great day.

I have that tutorial downloaded. It is very good.

saibabameuk ( ) posted Sat, 06 November 2010 at 5:50 AM

I agree especily the hair tutorial, however I find that when I save my hair to the library it looks very thin when I go to re use it.

Perhaps its my age!

kyhighlander59 ( ) posted Sat, 06 November 2010 at 5:59 AM

I have the same problem, wonder what it is?

saibabameuk ( ) posted Sat, 06 November 2010 at 6:08 AM

Perhaps we should open a thread " When I save my hair to poser library 8 I lose most of my hair when I when I re apply it" or somthing like that.

What do you think?

I know its early for you and perhaps I should not ask,

oh by the way not being personel but I notice you do not have that much hair.

kyhighlander59 ( ) posted Sat, 06 November 2010 at 6:11 AM

LOL I am a barber by trade, when I have someone lament about hair loss I just tell them to scoot down in the bed a bit more that they are probably wearing it off on the head board. LOL

I did a Mohawk for the Troll on my PoserNation website and had trouble with it getting thin, but it still looked pretty cool on him anyway. LOL

Thank you so much!

I did not know that wings 3d was free. I will definetly start trying to learn how to use it because, one of my main goals is to make clothing for poser characters.

I just happen to stumble in here and see I'm being talked about :oP  lol

I just started using Poser and Wings 3D, 6 months ago, and I've had a blast!

Providing you already know how to load  figures/props/etc into your scene, I'd say start with the material room. A small bump map can go a long way when it comes to subtle details. Lighting is another important thing, but can get quite complicated, especially when you get into volumetrics. As for poses and hair, well, even I avoid a couple areas from time to time... lol   Once I started making my own stuff in Wings tho, Poser stepped down to what I enjoyed more then making images alone. Yeah I like making the nice image here and there, but your work is much more original if you add something that no1 else has, or at least be the 1st person to show it off.

You started in the right place tho, as the people here have given me a lot of help, I wouldn't be where I am without them. You'll start noticing the Pro's on here after a while, but as mentioned before, BagginsBill, ALWAYS pay attention to what he says, PhilC, and Geep. Those are 3 that know what the hell they are doing.

You can do a lot with Hexagon from DAZ3D as well, here is something I have been working on over the past few weeks. Am further along than this render but this is the last screen grab I have made.
